IT SEEMS ODD THAT A FAMILY PET WOULD HAVE SUCH A LONG NAME AND A BORN DATE ON ITS COLLAR . IT'S RATHER SMALL , INSIDE DIAMETER IS 4 1/4 INCHES . THE BUCKLE HAS A ''RING '' HASP WHERE A SMALL PADLOCK MAY HAVE BEEN . THE RING SHOWS LOTS OF WEAR . ANY IDEAS??

I must be losing it!

I went back to the "What Is It?" forum index for November 4, 2009 - but the thread regarding the tent spike is either under a new title or else has vanished! The only reason I even remember it is because I had a recent Email notice on it that I kept for some reason. Anyway, it's probably nothing, but here's the link from my Email notice.

And as for the length, I'd say about 12 to 15 inches long.

http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php?topic=281164.new;topicseen#new

I hope I get it right this time - if not I'm throwing in the towel!

So is it me, or did that thread disappear? If so, how is it possible to delete "everything?"

This thread may be getting off track - and if it is, I may be partially responsible, for which I apologize. In any event, in an attempt to clear the haze, I'd like to suggest we take a vote. I realize the jury is still out on this one, but based on the current evidence, do you/we think the item in question is a slave collar or a dog collar? I'm not sure if a vote of this nature has ever been done on Tnet, or if it's even appropiate, but I thought I'd throw it out there and see what happens. I also respect the fact this is not my thread, but would like to thank all concerned for their valuable input. All opinions are equal - mine - your's - and everyone's!

I vote ... "DOG COLLAR"

Hello Bob. It not up to you or me and its not put up to a vote. Its the sole decision of the poster of this thread and owner of the item to decide if it is solved or not.

I think the slave iron pin item in question was posted by 4H (NOT this tent stake you posted) but I cant find the post. The head on this "tent spike" does not look at all like the slave item posted. Yes Bob, you are responsible for posting tent spikes (or whatever it is) on this thread and getting it further off track. :D

ADDED: Actually there are some other items on that thread you posted that look closer to the slave pin.

I really love TreasureNet ... I honestly do! Where else can you stick your nose into other people's affairs and not get a black eye? Not to mention playing detective and help in solving mysteries? I haven't had this much fun since I was ten years old and played the board game "Clue." But I've learned now that there isn't a thread on Tnet that doesn't get off track from time to time. So with that said I will dive back into cyber space and leave this one alone until if/when such time that I find something of genuine interest besides the ramblings of a enthusiastic alchemist. But I still think it's a dog collar! :angel12:

Respectfully,

Thats all you can do is state your opinion (dog collar)and try to support it with a link or pictures. Mojjax will make the final decision. Thats the way its always worked. :icon_thumright: Warning: TN can be addicting.

cw0909 has said that he believes he has seen part of a slave item posted here on TN before. I dont believe the tent spike looking thing was what he had in mind.

Please, please, please don't think I'm being a wise guy, because I'm really not. I know I said I wouldn't be back unless I had something of genuine interest to post. But would you believe I actually went looking for that slave item just mentioned as possibly being on Tnet? That is until I did a quick count on the number of possible topics to look under. I discovered there are approximately 300,000 individual "topics" already posted on TreasureNet, not to mention if each topic has at least 20 replies, (which seems plausible) then this number comes to a grand total of at least 6,000,000 (six million) different places to look!

The only reason I even mention this is ...

1. I honestly believe it will be of interest to others.
2. To show that my heart is in the right place.
3. To show that I'm good for something.
4. To pass the torch to someone else, cause I ain't lookin' for it!

Gee Willerkers! What did you guys do without me all this time?

With personal, profound and sincere respect!

Your buddy,

Bob

P.S. Please be reminded this "collar" topic first appeared on March 13, 2005!

Buckle Elf -

Thanks ... I've been considering that and have dropped a hint to Santa about it.
In the meantime maybe a current Charter Member (hint -hint) would like to look into it.

Have a great Christmas.

I was just cruising by and thought I'd drop these off. Note the date is 1933 and dog license information is attached directly to the collar. Also has padlock ring. Similar to collar in question but not exact.

That's one cool relic. I think most of us agree that it's a dog collar. I would like to know the age. When did they start manufacturing that style of buckle that has the center piece that rolls so the collar wouldn't bind? There must be a buckle expert on here that can help.
I don't think the number is a registration # because they started making metal dog licenses in the 1880's and the # on the license would change ever year.
Since were on the dog subject here's a quick true story from the town I live in. There was a Civil War veteran that went to the polls to vote in the local election. The man at the polls told him he couldn't vote because he wasn't a taxpayer. The upset veteran left and returned a short time later with a slip of paper. He handed the paper to the man running the poll and when he read it his face turned red, then let the veteran vote. The slip of paper was a receipt for his dog tax. ;D

I found the following quote from an article pertaining to suggestions and guidelines for selling items on eBay. The attached photo is described as a slave "collar," but appears to be more of a bracelet. No specific measurements were given, or date. But it clearly shows what appears to be a size adjustment and locking mechanism. Which suggest it most likely is a collar and not a bracelet. It strikes me odd that it has a lock! One good yank and it could be fairly easily removed. I suspect the lock was more symbolic than functional. It also said the name on the tag was that of the owner and not the "adoptive" name of the slave.

Quote:

* Dog collars are often wrongly identified as collars worn by prisoners or slaves which are actually much rarer and valuable than collars worn by dogs. But there's good news here for anyone able to identify the more uncommon slave and prisoner collars from items selling mistakenly and undervalued as dog collars which can be resold with more accurate description on eBay.

Personal note *

I think we all agree this is a very delicate subject. I for one have learned a lot in the past day or so, and personally would not buy or sell a slave related item on eBay or elsewhere. I would, however, donate such an item to a museum. Nor am I suggesting that others refrain, as I know there are avid collectors in this field - Oprah Winfrey and Whoopie Goldberg to mention just a couple. The link below is to one such museum and is worth taking a look at. The featured video is not only educational, but simply amazing to watch! This was a tragic period in American history and should be approached with the highest level of decorum. Thanks.

If I am seeing it right the date? is 3 18??. I think its a older phone number. Around here would have been a number like that in that formate ie: 4 1234. The first number would be the exchange and the last would be the party line. This was when operators had to run a switch board.

WOW,sorry mojjax
i was just looking to help mojjax, and IMO its still a dog collar,
and looking through the link i saw the pins, and thought id seen them b4
at least a yr or more, and more like, MORE than a yr, im not saying the info
at that link for the pins is correct, and agreed the person should have
sighted a link to info, that those pins, are indeed slave pins, anyway
since mojjax post was 2005, and i found some info, on a possibly, historical
and monetary value item, i thought that id seen b4, i would put it up hoping
the person who posted what, i thought id seen, would see it , since the thread is
at the top.
and to help those looking, i thought it was one pin and the 1 ring. but ring broken
and they were wondering why so long of a pin.and the size of ring.
mods, if you think this needs to be moved, so be it

It does look a bit like a Victorian dog collar. "B" could be bitch not born, but maybe born. Looks the right size for a fighting dog. Be easy to find out, get the microscope out and look deeper.
