Went to an old farmhouse this morning that I had obtained permission to hunt. Found 8 memorials then found this. 185x Seated Quarter about 8 inches deep. Not only was there a hole drilled through the date, it was also bent where he had hammered the hole through it. I figured it is already wrecked, so I straightened it out without any further damage. So disappointing to find a coin that you don't find very often and it is wrecked. Oh well. I'll put it on my key ring for luck.

I would take a seated in any condition at this point....never found one. Pretty cool find all in all though!

It is a shame but still a nice find, any seated is congrats. I was lucky in one I found that had a hole it in was in really nice shape.I took a pic of it around my neck, here it is. I found it in a union civil war camp near Columbia , South Carolina. I found it amongst several eagle buttons and bullets. One of Shermans men was wearing it now I am. I believe the one with rays was made for only one year, not sure but thought somebody told me that before. Consider wearing yours it still a cool coin.

The hole is actually part of the history of the coin and a very common occurrence for those days.

CONGRATS on a Great Find!:hello2::hello2::hello2:

Rays were from 1853-1855.

Back in the day people would hole coins and wear them on a string so they didn't lose them.

still soo great soo jelous

awesome find! that was the way they were carried so I think it is fantastic. congrats

I put it on my key chain next to a 1892 holed indian head that has been on my keychain for 20 years.

Well, better a hole than molested by the plow. Almost all of the coins I dig in the cane fields here have dings, and some of them have been bent in half. And I wouldn't trade any of them for anything in the world. All history. And it all "spent" the same as an unholed or undamaged one when it was lost. Great piece of history!

It sure beats my best (1936 dime). Awesome find.
