So what type of damge can you do to your hard drive if you ran your coil over it while it is on? Just wondering?

You need a Magnet, and a pretty decent magnet to do any damage.

The field generated by a MD is simply not going to damage your hard disk. Plus, the hard disk is shielded by several layers of metal.
