Some Notes Re: Construction of the Money Pit

Going back to the idea that 2 boxes were stacked...
We know a dimension is 30" top to bottom, and that top and bottom of box had 4" oak, so let's make a box 30 x 30 x 30.
Total ft3 of box only is 9.45, and weighs 440 lbs.
Total ft3 of interior 22 x 22 x 22 is 6.2

Let's fill it with real gold: 6.2 x 62.4 lbs water/ft3 x 19.3 density gold versus water = 7400 lbs.
Total box and gold 7840 lbs.

There will be difficulties moving this.

Next questions - how far does a ship have to be from a dock before lifting 7840 lbs with boom/hoist makes ship heel over and sink?
Can a windlass lift this heavy a load?
How deep in the mud does it sink?

Note: a floor that can support 9 ft of dirt can support these boxes.

Would you bring a bathtub to an installation site full of water?

Surely ya'll don't think they carried it all from the boat to the pit in 1 big box. That tree branch wasn't big enough to lower it all down !!

I don't think they carried ANYTHING from the boat to the pit, come on guys be realistic, after 100 years of digging and millions of dollars spent and many lives lost, they haven't found JACK SHIT..
There is NOTHING DOWN THERE :dontknow: 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

I'm just pointing out the obvious .. :icon_scratch: :laughing7: 🤣

Doggone it. I shoulda left it alone.

There is a transcript of an article from the Liverpool Manuscript Oct 16, 1862 signed by
J B McCully, someone who was actually there when the Truro Co probed the "treasure room" with an auger.

Copy in thread "Did a Sawpit ..." post 93.

Note in particular his description of this room.

Probed " 6" spruce" at 98 ft. Check.
" 1 ft air space" Right.
" 4" oak". Yup.
" 20" of loose metal". Read 22". elsewhere
" 8" oak". Still with ya.
" 6" spruce"
7 ft clay underneath.

Wait, what?

Now the description of the interior 3' 8" high not 6', which makes it a storage area, not a storage room.

The conjectural box only is 28" cubed now weighing 380 lbs, and pretending to stuff it with gold weighing 5540 lbs makes ... call it 6000 lbs.

Gravelteeth - there is some information in that same post regarding auger design you were looking for.

So this container is more or less square right? 28 inches by 28 inches? That's 71 cm × 71 cm.
I mean 71 by 71 by 71 cm....
I am gonna calculate the cubic m of space and then see how much it should have been filled with Au in order to contain 2500 kg gold. But how did they carry it?? Did they mention hooks or some kind of metal handles?

I calculated 0.7 m × 0.7 m × 0.3 m × 18 tons ( if it is quite high grade gold purity )
It came to just 100 and some kg more than what 5540 lbs would have been in kg.
But.I allow for empty space in between the gold money and also between the walla of the container and the contents. So it must have been full not to 30 cm of its height but maybe to about 35 or 40 cm of its height. So around 57- 60 % full. Which sounds logical.

Oh you metrics....

Yes assumed a cube. It looks like the top and bottom of the box is 4" thick, so I assumed the sides were the same. It leaves a core of 20" x 20" x 20". How do those numbers work out (metrically speaking)?

Nothing mentioned re lifting the crate, but if you believe the COOI show, there may have been a cargo net.

Well, I put in 0.51 m× 0.51 m × 0.51 m × 18 tonnes for very high purity gold. Probably close to 21.6 Karats.
= total = 2390 kg roughly.
So the entire space of this cube will not be enough to fit the 2515 kg content. To the ceiling full, not enough space.
Just by little..
Then multiplied 0.51 × 0.51 × 0.51 × lesser purity gold > lets say 15 tones = 1.99 tones or 1990 kg. Even more deficient space this box offers.
For this kind of gold. I didn't subtract total weight accommodated for empty gaps of space this time.
I think not very logical for them to have been filled it to the top.
Was it welded?
Maybe they had way more money and they filled 2nd or even 3rd box?
I don't know the story or legend.
Just was curious to calculate

I just read your introduction.
So maybe they didn't cushion the entire top surface and/or sides?? But instead just put rectangular wood pillars/ boards at the perimeters?
This way more gold would fit inside.

I don't think it woukd sink more than 2 to 2.5 feet in the mud Initially. Maybe even less. But with time, it might have sunk - depending if the mud is changing density with depth or if it was just mud, but could have sunk as much as additional 3 feet.
So average probably 1.5 feet initual sinking and 2 more feet average more= 3.5 feet.

What crate and what treasure room are you referring to?

The "gold" purportedly on the supposed auger used by the Truro company was NEVER submitted to anyone to verify it was gold.

Like so many other fictional stories by scammers on oak island, no verifiable proof as to this story is available.

That's why at the 20 × 20 × 20 inch reassessed cube parameters, I said it doesn't sound logical.
Because if it were, and if it contained only Gold money, no way to fit 2515 kg inside. Even if it were filled " to the brim "

About 1700 kg most you could fit. Because there are gaps of air in between...

Check my numbers.
The core is .131 m^3.
Weight of water 1000 kg/m^3.
Density of gold/water 19.3 (oops I used 19.7
last time).
.131 x 1000 x 19.3 = 2528 kg
Am thinking this 19.3 value is the scientific in the lab determination value of pure pure gold.
Am further thinking your values are for ore samples? a more practical way to look at it.

The reason I'm thinking about gold being stuffed in this box is it seems as if the box was built heavy duty to HOLD gold, (but there's only fool's gold on the island). This might lead to finding out who arrived there expecting to mine gold.

Love a good math fight - let's stay friendly.

I know it's 0.131 cubic m
You are totally correct
0.508 m × 0.508 m × 0.508 m = 0.131 m ^ 3

Then again you are right to multiply by 19.3 tonnes.

( 19.3 grams per cm ^ 3 )
But that's for pure gold.
As you said
And it = 2530 kg in fact
But how do you know they stuffed with pure gold?
I was assuming not for 100 % gold but for about 21.6 Katat. Which is 90 % .
Then I tried with lesser purity 15 gr/ cm^3 assuming it was weaker purity gold OR and maybe some of the contents were maybe Silver.... 10.5 grams for pure Ag

But even if they stuffed it with 24 Karat good or close, do you think they miraculously inserted a solid 50.8 cm × 50.8 cm × 50.8 cm cast pure gold?

plus how would they slide it out? If they did inserted solid cube of gold

By tipping over the container.sideways?

So I left at least 10 % of volume for air space.

Agree that it's unlikely that someone poured liquid gold into an open box to the very tippy-top and put a lid on it, the only way I see to get it 100% full.
My numbers were to get the theoretical maximum weight that the box was made for.

I think the point is moot because there was never any gold in the box, although it was built to hold it. You could compute the weight as though it was stuffed with iron pyrite (fool's gold), but who cares about that.

Am now thinking that this box seems more like a shipping container rather than a part of the mining operation.

Note that the description above has no air space between the top of the box and the "loose metal", and that the loose metal will have air spaces within it. Just to keep things interesting.

Another thing sorta related.

Aerial views of OI show a circular obviously man-made water filled hole on the SOUTH shore of the island.
If this is not a searcher shaft, then it's a mine entrance. If you dig across and connect to the MP, you now have an air flow into the mine, across, then out the MP, making the MP a ventilation shaft. This is consistent with the aforementioned book of mining techniques prior to 1795.

It's been thoroughly discussed before, no need to bite. Carry on.
