I've been reading the series of books by Zackaria Zitchin commonly referred to as The Earth Chronicles, and he found out during his investigations in MesoAmerica that the calender was started in the year that the Feathered Serpant God left them. The calender is supposedly counting down until "his" return..........NOT the end of the world. Makes sense.

I wonder how many time the carver of that stone had to START OVER because of a mistake in spelling or the wrong piece of stone chipped out. LMAO. MAYBE that thousand year thing is how long he thought it would take to produce an error free calender.
