Okay guys and gals, this is what you've all been waiting to hear. I finaly got a sound bite of the Bone Whistle and my son loaded it to YouTube. Make sure to turn your sound up real loud and you can hear it and don't make fun of the guy with the crooked glasses. lol

Re: Sound Bite Of My Bone Flute

Molly, my dogs hate it too. Gypsy, our Terrier/Chihuahua mix howls when I blow on it. lol

Re: Sound Bite Of My Bone Flute

My dog also started barking when he heard it, It really has a high pitch sound. That is really neat, something that old that still makes a sound after being outside all those years.

Re: Sound Bite Of My Bone Flute

Ok, nice sound bite. do you play requests? Does it sound different if you cover up the holes?

Re: Sound Bite Of My Bone Flute

Targe, you are probably correct on that assumption. I too believe it was actually a Whistle and not an actual Flute or musical instrument. I probably should have whistle instead of flute.

naturegirl, it does change tone when you cover up the holes. I covered up one of the holes on that video and you can hear the difference, but it doesn't change that much.

Best video ever, that was neat thanks for doing that man ,really neat to hear that... :headbang:

Very interesting theory...

Your flute is a amazing artifact. With three holes in it a musician would not call it a whistle. The person who made it must have been very artistic for the time. I bet they new how to whistle for their dogs----with thier lips! And all whistles have one hole. JMO. Thanks for the audio post of your flute. Keith.

That is INCREDIBLE! Yes, I have been waiting to hear that. I figured it would be shrill due to its size. I wonder why they put the holes in it, since there would be very little discernible change in pitch when covering those holes.

That is Quite A Find. :notworthy:

Steve that was very cool hearing that after all this time. Not often we hear a sound from the past.
Thanks!!

I have a bear tooth that looks like it could have been used as a guitar pick. I want to see that thing. Steve. And your collection. Going to Portsmouth this week. Keith.

Thanks everyone. I'm glad you all like it.

Targe, I actually have another one with 4 holes, but it doesn't whistle very well at all. I think it should have had 5 holes but they never finished it. I can't get the picture here from home because I have a virus on my computer and I'm using my wife's laptop, so no pictures on here. I also have 3 or 4 other broken ones I have found. I'll post pictures of them when I get back to work.

Keith, give me a call when you get in town and we'll see if we can get together. I'm off Monday and then have to work Tuesday and Weds and then off Thursday and Friday. I work midnights and usually get up around 2 PM so give me a call. My numbers in the book or if you need it let me know and I'll PM it to you.

That's so cool, SRV! Here's something you might like---While at Woolaroc(a small local museum), we saw a bone whistle carried by Quanah Parker into battle. Maybe your whistle was used for something like that--to be carried into battle to scare the enemy :dontknow: . I always heard Indians were superstitious about somebody whistling and thought it was bad.
Here's a picture of Quanah Parker's whistle.

sandcreek, I actually had a guy tell me about that. He said that they would blow Whistles as they went into battle to confuse and distract their enemies. Like he said, could you imagine hundreds a of warriors coming at you and all of them blowing Whistles.

Do you take requests? I wanna hear "Iron Man"!

No offers yet. Not that it matters. I wouldn't part with no matter what the price. Only good one I've ever found and buying one just isn't the same.
