Spanish Silver Dollar Pieces of Eight

Hi i found this Spanish Silver Dollar metal detecting Sauturday,12/4/2010.On one side it says omd.i am sure that it says M,but can be artwork above the M or below the M.I seen someones on ebay and it did have omd,so im not sure.

How much can i get for this and where is best to sell it?

I dug it up in a nice place with lots of history in Mass.

Don is correct as far as I know. The term "two bits" survives to this day in English as a synonym for a US quarter (25 cents for our foreign friends). Though I have never heard the term "piece of eight" I trust Don is correct here as well. Interestingly enough a 1/2 reale is roughly the size of our dime and there would have been 16 of them in a Pieces of Eight - echoing the old English system of measures (16 oz in a lb, etc). I believe the number eight also has some religious significance which has even found it's way into Western music with seven notes in the major scale and the eighth returning to the root of the scale.

Kuger: You may want to clarify this: "A piece of 8 is a cut off piece of an 8 real...yours is more like a Cobb".
Actually, a 'piece of 8' is NOT a cut off a piece of an 8 real; it's the entire 8-reales coin. A piece off an 8 real is considered a 'bit' and 8-reales are found divided into eights (one 'bit') or quarters (two 'bits') or half a 'piece of eight' (4 bits).

Thanks Mac,not the way I have always been told,as an 8 reale is an 8 reale,and the "bits",are then pieces of 8?I know your knowledge far exceeds mine in this dept,though so I digress

Interesting find....I am curious as to the authenticity because what I know of these things could fill a thimble.. so I will leave it to the experts.

Try using a scanner - you'll get a much better image I think.

Sometimes if you step back away from it and zoom in to the coin it might come out clearer....It took me a bit before i figured out how to do the close ups of coins

Well i at least learned to resize a photo with my cel camera..i made it to 320x240 for now this will have to do untill i get my buddies wife to take some!
