Spanish Silver Makes for a Happy Friday

I continue to re-visit a site that has produced a number of colonial era large cents and relics. Despite my best efforts, finding a period silver coin hasn't worked out...until today. I took my time gridding a section that I hadn't given a ton of attention. After about an hour I hit a very faint " 86" in my Deus 2.

I was hoping for an IHP, but was thrilled to see a thin silver coin in the hole. Turned out to be a King Phillip V 1 reale. The coin is heavily worn, and the date is gone ( seems to be a trend for me this year), but happy to get a positive ID. Finding Spanish silver is a rare treat for me, so this coin really made my day.

Other finds included a few modern coins, a bracelet, some odds/ ends, and the typical trash.

Very nice early 1700s Spanish silver. Although missing a date, perhaps someone will be able to give you a date range based on the specific variety. Awesome find … congrats!

Wow congrats SM. Great coin! Looks like they were minted from 1701 to 1745, depending on whether it was minted in Spain, Peru or Mexico. He had a long reign (1700-1746). Way to go!

Thanks everyone. The coin has a " SP" mintmark ("S" to the left of the shield, "P" to the right of the shield). I believe the "S" means that it was minted in Seville, Spain. I'm guessing that the "P" is the initial of the engraver. The only Philip V 1 real with that combination of mintmarks that I could find on the web was made in 1737. I'm certainly no expert in this area, so if someone else has a different idea, please let me know. Cheers!

Philip V, that's a very good king to find on a Spanish coin! He reigned during the War of the Spanish Succession. This war pretty much ushered in the start of the Golden Age of Piracy in the first quarter of he 18th century. Many of the most infamous pirates would have been around during his reign; Black Beard, Hornigold, Black Sam Bellamy, Calico Jack Rackham, etc. Your coin likely passed through many a pirate's hands (and hooks).

Congrats on that nice looking Spanish silver. Those are tough to come by for me. I only have 2 in 37 years of digging, (but I'm from Illinois where they were both found).

Thanks for all that great info UnderMiner. Finding a coin that might have passed through the hands (or hooks) of a pirate or two is what makes this hobby GREAT!
