Found this one many years ago in the same waterfront garden in the San Juan Islands WA as my last stone tool post. I always saw it as a hoe or a shovel. Notice how it's been worked all the way around, but the blunt end is worn down from its use. fits nice in your hand! Measures 6" x 3 1/2". Anyone know how it was used?

Hey unclemac! We used to beach the boat over at Shaw island back in the day to get away from Lopez for awhile. Back then there was nuns running the ferry dock and the only store. So if you bought beer you were buying it from a nun! Now that's different. Very quiet peaceful Island. The people keep it that way.

my wife's great grandpa built that store and ran it until he died....

Back then everyone on Lopez was Gill netting. I went out a few times with my girlfriends dad just for the experience. The gill netters there used to complain all the time that the purse seiners got all the fish the night before. So feel lucky! Then came Judge Boldt and everyone sold their boats.

I was married to a native woman at the time so the Boldt decision was a good thing in my family. I can still taste the canned (in jars) salmon we used to be given and the alder smoked salmon that was dry like jerky and made your tongue numb.

I'm thinking natural as well, just don't see the work or what the rest of you are seeing??
I would have kept it as well though. Keep posting.

I'm with you and you know what?...who is to say that someone didn't use it as a hand held spade once because it looked useful...I can't tell you how many times I have been out hunting or wandering or whatever and I needed a rock to pound with or to abrade with or to cut with...you look for the best shape for the need you have.

I used a sharp rock today to pry some other rocks loose. Maybe somebody a 1000 yrs from now will pick it up and say its a hoe........IDK

and sometimes i have to "modify" that stone or stick too to make it serve my purpose better.
