Any ideas what this thing is for ? The saw blade is iron - the rest of it is brass .

I don't think it's a saw blade because the teeth aren't kerfed (offset) On a saw blade the teeth angle outward so the cut is a bit wider than the blade. It's so the blade is less likely to bind. It looks more like maybe a racheting mechanism, or maybe there was a gear riding on it at one time......

what kind of place was it found in?

To get you looking at it in a different way, I don't think it is a saw.
It looks more like a gear rack. That it would mount along a round
shaft (possibly wood?) is what's most puzzling.

I found it in our chicken coop which is attached to our barn - the barn is 190 years old .

I think the teeth are for hanging an object, like a saw-tooth picture hanger. This one could possibly fit on a Victorian draperyrod to hang the the swag or ascot flaps. Velvet is/was heavy material.

It could have fit on a rod to hang a lantern or the likes; it looks like it was made to securely hang an object that could move slightly left or right. Breezie

Good guess Breezie. It does resemble a sawtooth hanger.

The arms with the holes looks like it had another piece like a pole saw (tree trimmer) or a painters pole. The toothed one would let the end adjust for different angles. There used to be paint poles that would hold a brush made back in the fiftys. I'll try looking through my old tool catalogs.

That is the wick carrier (wick raiser) for an oil lamp. It appears to be from an Aladdin Mantle lamp. Depending on the model its age could be from 1908 to the present.

When I got home I checked my Aladdin book. This wick raiser was used on the model 7 thru the model 11. The model 7 was introduced in August 1917 and the model 11 ended production May 1928. When the model 7 was introduced, Aladdin offered a $1000 reward to any person who could show them an oil lamp its equal. The Aladdins produced a white light and about the same light output as a 60 watt bulb.
