Hey everyone, this is my first post.
I just finished looking through 10 half dollar bank rolls and found this...
It appears to be silver, the edge of the coin is one reason why it does, also the metal just looks different overall compared to other non silver half dollars.
This wouldn't normally be that strange, but the coin doesn't have an S mint mark which silver Bicentennial half dollars should have.
If anyone has any ideas about this, please tell me. I have my own ideas, but I want to hear other peoples thoughts before I say what I think.
The coin on the left is the "silver" half dollar. I put the other non silver one next to it for comparison.

Probably Philly mint and not the silver San Fran you suspect it to be. Does it sound like silver when dropping onto a table top?

Hey villagenut, thanks for the feedback. I didn't know silver would make a significantly different sound. Would it be higher or lower than a normal non silver coin.

Weigh it. Silver halves weigh in a bit more than clad halves. I suspect it is not a
silver half, but rather a plated half. Easy to do. Jr. High chemistry 45 years ago.

That is why the 'Old Timey' cash registers had a strip of granite or other stone for the cashier to tap a coin to see if counterfeit or not.

It makes a slightly higher sound then a (for certain) non silver Bicentennial half dollar. It is not a significantly high tone, but it is noticeable.

hey galenrog, I don't have a scale sensitive enough. What would you supposed it is plated with, silver?

It looks to have been glued to something,Probably plated to pass as genuine.

Okay Back-of-the-boat, I also thought it might have been glued to something, and that someone plated the front because that is all anyone saw since it was glued from the back, but why would the sides be plated as well? It just seems like too much effort...

It is a silver plated half. A company plates these halves, and sells them for more than 50c

Okay interesting CoinFetcher, thanks for the info.

I had a colibri quartz pocket watch with a bicentennial half in the cover. I suspected that it was silver-plated as well.
