Bring your scroll bar on the xtreme right of the picture, scroll approx.1/2 way down, slowly.

leave the picture alone horizontally, and merely scroll vertically 1/2way down using the bar at the right of the picture."

That there ol' Tex Barkley was an interesting person. Said he did it to stop people from scattering his cattle, but one has to wonder if he wasn't a bit of a DH himself. He saw plenty of sign on Peter's Mesa.

yep...thats what i heard also...i think he hunted the ldm way more than he let on and his ranch was the hub where most of the searches started so all the ldm hunter's would stop in and drop clues ..in my opinion he knew where all of their hunting grounds were and kept tabs on them

CW0909,

It has been pretty well known that it actually appears to be most likely Waltz came over on the Ville de Lyon into New York in 1839 from Havre:

ISTG SITE

Jacob Waltz is passenger number 308. The age of this Jacob Waltz is right as it shows this Jacob Waltz as being 20 in 1839. We know our Waltz was born in 1810. Since the whole Olbers thing is not true, things go back to the Ville de Lyon.

Mike

ya i think that the right JW too, just wondering if he was a criminal
checked the passlists to see if JW ever went back out of country
could not find one returning, that would be the right age. so unless
JW used an alias, he never went out of usa, he could have traveled
to mex or ca. and came back that way i guess, but i dont think JW
was ever trying to be super covert, except with his gold mine/cache

What is strange is the lack of any mention of a Jacob Waltz in the period papers.
Anyone know what happened to his estate directly after his death?

I believe Waltz' obituary did appear in the Phoenix Daily Herald on Oct. 26th, 1891. As to his property....that's questionable. I'm sure you remember that Waltz had conveyed all his worldly goods to Andrew Starar in 1878 in return for Starar providing care for Waltz thence forward. Of course, Andrew Starar predeceased Waltz and we all know how that turned out.

Waltz would have only had available as "an estate" anything acquired subsequent to his agreement with Starar in 1878. It appears Andrew Starar's estate passed to his brother Jacob Starar. Why; I don't know, as its told Andrew had at least one son living at his death.

Strange things happened in those days, not all of which went by the strict rule of law........ Sometimes it went by how much clout you had and who you knew. On second thought; maybe not much has changed <g>.

In the very center of the picture. of the left side. In other words leave the picture alone horizontally, and merely scroll 1/2way down using the bar at the right of the picture.

Is that my picture? I never noticed the wooden frame or the tripod! I was up on that ledge and still never noticed it! All these years looking for the LDM and someone was removing the gold while I photographed it!

It's gone by now no need to look anymore.

I'm gonna need a ladder and some rope but hey at least you can drive up to it!

Im totally surprised not one person camping at the Dons camp has ever seen this!

Here's a better perspective with a circle.

Blows up nicely Bill, and yes, it is your picture. Whatever they were after, I doubt that got it all. :laughing7::notworthy: They were not hardrocking, no tailings , course they could have carried the handpicked ore and processued the coarse somewhere else, but very small scale.,

That's how I read the agreement. The full agreement is available in the archives here. Its pretty straight forward. Starar gets all Waltz' stuff (real and personal property) and in return Starar has to take care of (and protect, which I found somewhat strange) Waltz from 8/8/1878 in health or sickness for the rest of his natural life.

Ya, but, look at that tripod they had for hauling equipment up. Right in broad daylight! They must have had camouflage covers on there. I took those photo's way back when and never even bothered looking for anything like that!

I'm going to drive up there now and see what they were up to. It's not hard to get up there. I was on that ledge and never saw it! But it must be important for someone to go through all that trouble. Right above the Don's Camp! You would think those inebriated Dutch Hunters at the annual gathering of misfit Treasure Hunters would've looked up at something once in a blue moon while slugging down a pint or two? Maybe it was one of the upper class Dutch Hunter abodes? They could've thrown rocks on top of the lowly down trodden newbies at the Don's Camp with a few attached maps and some silly advice on where to start their searches...

Just think of it, They gather once a year to swap information about where to look for the mine and all along it was right above their scratching heads!! Ahhh..the glory of it all! I wonder if they worked the pit mine up above it? And the Dons camp was built right on top of an old two room rock cabin!! Old Jacob is laughing his mummified butt off!!

You people really don't read reply's do you - Matthew already told you what it was

Wild Bill,

Google 'Dacite or Lava Cliffs' by Tom Kollenborn to get the story.

Great picture, thanks for taking it.
And thanks to RdTTT for pointing out it's 'features'.

"history of arizona" ch.8 vol.6
about the set up of the town site in 1870, mentions Duppa, and the Starar
bro. among others, no mention of waltz, weird as you would think he would want
a say, cause it would value his land big$$, because of location just like the Starar
bro. and the others
CHAPTER VIII. PHOENIX AND SALT RIVER VALLEY.

[Probably old hat to you serious research types, but I noticed mentioned during a documentary concerning a possible Viking map of North America, that Yale University was said to house an outstanding collection of ancient maps and manuscripts.
May be common knowledge but thought I should mention it, you never know...]

Looks like they did the outside shots at GoldField by the Blue Bird Mine. I loved the "Poker Game".

Don't need old Tom to tell me about it. I've been there many times. I looked in the cave on the right behind the bushes and trees. It didn't go back very far but I was right there on that ridge and still didn't see that set up on the higher up cliff face. I went metal detecting Saturday down by Arrivaca and ran into an old Missouri Boy like me named Marion a living and working on a sand bar island in the wash! He said: "You found some gold nuggets back in here?"

I said sure did!

He said: "Show me!".

And so it went on...

I only found trash that day, but, it was just mere feet from where I found those nuggets in Pajarro Wash. Last time I went there it had just rearranged the whole damn wash after a giant flood. You couldn't drive up there anymore. The Desert Gold Digger club cleaned it up so you could drive up a bit further now. Marion was a retired Manager. He had a home made dry trommel like I'd never seen before and a Keene Puffer. He never panned the concentrates just ran his washer for five days dug a hole about five feet deep attempting to get to bedrock and left for home. He slept in one of those cot tents and kept his food in the back of his camper shelled ford.

Speaking of old guys living on sandbars, have you ever read the book;

'The Last of the Mountain Men' by Harold Peterson?

It's the true-life story of Sylvan Hart, the last of the old timers in the Salmon river valley of Idaho, interesting read, I bet you'd like it.
