Last week I got out with my V3i to my "hunted out" site near my house. I dug some nice buttons and found a mini coin spill from the 1920's. A 1923 Buffalo and Wheaties dated 1917 & 1920. On my way out I dug the silver ring. I caught it on video and edited it down to a 50 second "trailer". I think it came out pretty cool.

Yesterday morning I was up early so I decided to hit the site again. I dug a couple of buttons but after a while I decided to call it quits. I had accepted defeat when I got a broken trashy tone with some highlights. The dominant frequency on the V3i was reading 7.5KHz and that is normally not deep iron which can sound the same as a deep button or coin sometimes. It was reading 7.5 inches deep, but there was nothing in the plug and no signal in the hole with the pinpointer. I dug a plug out of the bottom of the hole and when I waved the coil over the dirt pile, it was a steady 51...Usually a good sign of an Indian Head. Turned out to be an ugly 1883, but at least I did not get skunked! I estimate it was at least 9 inches down.
I got home around noon and decided to take a ride down the The Shore, so I packed my Minelab Excalibur and some beach chairs into the car and headed east. An hour later, I pulled into a dead end street that ended at the boardwalk, and found one of the most amazing things one could ever hope to find on a holiday weekend in the summer at the Jersey Shore...A Parking Spot....Not Just any parking spot, but the one at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the boardwalk! I got out of my car and looked for a "NO PARKING" or "HANDICAP PARKING ONLY", but there was none!
I parked my chairs and within minutes I was in the warm (but rough) surf. I have only used the Excal a handful of times and this was mostly on the dry and wet sand and not in the surf. I got some nice coin signals and worked to get the targets in the scoop. It is a whole new ballgame in the surf! Targets move and dissapear, or sound good and end up being things like coat hangers (yes, I dug my first yesterday). I also got a signal that sounded pure like gold, but I could not get it in my scoop and eventually lost the signal entirely. I am almost certain that I nearly had my first gold ring....the one that got away! It was a low tone similar to the many Corona crown caps, but yet much different....I guess I would say a cleaner sound.
I now have a new respect for beach hunters! It is a whole different ballgame out beyond the shore!
