Hi all,
After some treatment, I finally got some detail from the Crusty copper!
I knew it wasn't a GIII HP..
Made in Britain, allegedly the mint didn't have a G. Washington image, so he used a George III bust. not much left on the reverse. :'(
After digging this crusty, I placed it on a rock and promptly forgot about it,
the tidal current carried it about 20 feet, and I re recovered it the next day :D
this copper has been bothering me since I found it,
really happy to have finally IDed it :hello2:
http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/WASHTriumpho.intro.html
thanks for looking again! HH to All

Here's the recoveries it took to score that CW button I posted yesterday,
these are the non ferrous digs, iron was another bucketful
Amazing how those Tombacs hold up...
Tiny lead button, the shank is as big as the button :laughing7:
In the center of the group shot is the biggest parasol hub I've seen :o
crustiest copper yet, 29 mm :dontknow:
Nice Hogge item :help:
Big shooter marble.
Anyone know what the lead item shown with the cent might be?
Never saw a seal like this,
Lots of bottles & scrap, HH All!

Nice restoration job and congrats on the finds! HH, Mike

I believe the new photos are for comparison.. He would be a very wealthy restoration pro if he could restore his triumpho to look like the one pictured :laughing9:

Great ID, you were right on all along :o :headbang:
Indeed, the non red pix are for comparison
I've been searching here and there for something to match that crusty piece since I found it.
Thanks for your replies all! HH :hello2:

Congrats on IDing your Georgius Triumpho 1783 coin Herbie! :hello2:

I understand they were circulated in Florida and Georgia, the northernmost previously found was in South Carolina, by Mike of 'Woodlanddetectors'. Apparently, he got a line in 'coinfacts' for this! :o
This is certainly a rare find anywhere, but especially as far north as New Hampshire! :icon_thumright:

All the best to you,
Dave

Yes it is rare to find one. My friend Wayne Shelby has an article in the Winter of 2003 Colonial Coin Club Newsletter listing one he found in Burlington County NJ. I am sure more have been found and either the people do not post on forums or since they never cleaned the coins for proper ID, perhaps just thought "another KGIII copper".
Photo is from an article titled "Survey of Colonial Coins Recovered in Southern New Jersey" by Wayne Shelby

Herbie, I know where you found that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome Herbie! Super find!!

Glad you persisted and figured it out - much better than the guinea token I thought it was :D

Great job getting the ID on your Georgius. I wouldn't of been able to sleep, glad you recovered it the second time. Art

Cool copper! Can you share how you cleaned it up from that crusty state to where it is now? I have a similarly crusty coin that needs to be cleaned...

I know you do Chris!! there is so much stuff under those rocks, the only reason I got this was because that barge dug out the prop pit.
Thanks all for your replies!
Art & Bramble, I almost couldn't sleep wondering what it was :laughing7:
Then when I did find the image it was pretty clear ;D
(well, the image was, my coin, less so.... but certainly a positive ID :hello2:
Don, thank you for that info, I can understand someone thinking ' Another GIII '
really glad there was just enough left to see there was more than III REX on the right side.
Thanks Antiquarian, Mikes example is in Great condition!!
Greetings Winston TX,
With most sandcrusted copper, I heat & cool it till the crust loosens,
often I can remove both crust sides intact after this.
I start with boiling water to ice water, if this doesn't work, I try heating over flame.
If there is a chance your coin is silver DO NOT use a flame.
I think that more details remain from this than using chemicals.
(all intact metal remains)
I won't recommend this for anyone else, but when I get a coin in this condition,
I would like to at least get an ID.
Bottom photos are examples of crusted silver that came out pretty good
often what I get from these cookies are blank planchets, sometimes you get lucky  1821 cap dime & 1620s 4 Real cob, both cookies.
Thanks & HH All!

Hi Mike,
It makes me smile whenever I look at it ;D
some of the bars on the reverse side are becoming visible, I have it soaking in freshwater, I don't know why this makes some details reappear, but it's not the first time :icon_scratch:
I was talking with a man who has a detector his wife got him as a Christmas present,
he's never used it... there's a great looking spot of woods in back of his house ::)
I warned him about what will happen when he makes his first find
Chris,
I'll bring the boat over there, drop a stern hook & use the 70 HP
to blow some pits out just like the barge pusher did....
I remember showing you that hole & saying I got a cruddy copper nearby,
hadn't even taken the crust off it yet.
there is so much stuff in that area...
I've been harvesting from that tiny beach for a long time,
most of what's left is down deeper now,
we need to "just take a little off the top" :laughing9:
HH All! :D

extra crispy but one you don't see too often :icon_pirat: dawg

HOGGE image is familure to me. I have a 12 inch carving knife with wooden handle, on the handle is a brass HOGGE just like the one displayed with your pictures of the george III triumpho. coppertrader.

thanks for looking again!
