Chevy volt 35,000 to 40,000 price tag with 125+mpg. Wow what a good trade off for those seeking better gas milage. Pay less for gas and more in car payments. I can really see GM sinking deeper and deeper in millions of dollars in debt.

So who's gonna buy one of these things?

What ever money they make off these cars will go back to the bail out money they borrowed from the government.

I have this vision now that fuel prices are going down a little. I can see that in the next 20 years, cars manufactured running on battery energy, soon our electric bills will be going skyrocketed out of the roof because NOW everyone will need electricity to charge the batteries and another BIG CORPORATE EMPIRE will SUCK more of our HARD EARNINGS out because they KNOW WE NEED IT TO LIVE, just like the oil companies do!

I really don't know why the cars are selling for that much, I personally wouldn't buy something I can't get a piece of plywood in or a cord of firewood!

The big issue I would wonder about with electric cars is battery life. No matter how well you take care of them, the maximum life of rechargeable batteries seems to be around 5-7 years.
I believe they would use Lithium Ion batteries, like in a laptop, and these work great, but start holding less and less of a charge as years go by. Anyone with an older laptop can confirm this.

What would a new battery pack for these cars cost? $5000-10,000? Every few years?

At least if they go this route, they should design 'industry standard' battery units that fit any brand. No "Dodge only" batteries or "Chevrolet only" batteries. This might keep the price at least somewhat affordable.

If I were to saved every dime I make for the next year I would not be able to afford to buy an electric car...when will they realise average people don't make $300,000 a year.

I read an article, maybe from Motortrend were it claimed even the best electronic car vs. its gas version wouldnt pay for itself until like 9 years after buying it due to the price difference. So its better to just pay more for gas then more for an electric model car unless you plan on keeping it over 10 years.

Saw a website with a guy who had done a conversion on a Mercedes he bought cheap. Altogether the whole price was around 12k and the thing roared, quietly. But thee can be NO savings when we talk about the huge increase in your utility bill and as far as road tripping goes, how long to "fill'er up" along the way?

BTW, most of the current set of hybrids are not on the road today, since it never got above zero. With the drifting come nughtfall tonight, it'd be idiotic to drive one anywhere around here. Seen 'em stuck on 5-7 inches of snow already.

I read some articles about electric cars. There is a generator that keeps the batteries charged for quit a distance, usually around 2,000 miles or so, the average on road trips, etc. Then at night plug the car up.

I dont know about you guys but I like hearing the rumble of those 8 cylinders as I start the engine something an electric car will never produce. I seen they make a few fairly fast electric cars now but they can never reproduce the sound or the smell of a good old gas eating v8. Its not always about speed sometimes you just look good cruising down the street at 20mph with the glasspacks rumbleing away. On the other hand im all for electric cars, it means more gas for me!

Yeah I know what you mean, They might make a "SOUND BOX, to produce a "RUMBLE", I read a thread on Club Chopper, (for motorcyclists, etc) that in England, because of EPA emissions that ALL exhaust systems had to be in regulations. So now even the aftermarket motorcycle parts company was making a "Sound Box" that produce a "RUMBLE" when the motorcycle is running, that you can install on hte motorcycle to "KIND GET" that authentic sound! When I read the article I LAUGHED my tail off.

Lol I wonder how long till we have to do that here. I think i'd rather have no sound then a fake sound box. I seen one for sale that you can change the sounds depending on what you want, so now a honda can sound like a vette or farrari or gt-40...Personally i'd be embarrased having a soundbox on any car. America was the birthplace of the Muscle car and will most likely be the last to see it die but its only a metter of time before the tree huggers have them confined to museums and trailors since we wont be able to pass emissions standards to hit the streets.

There are plenty of "GREEN" Muscle Cars out there that are being built that meet EPA Standards. It is just a matter of Horse Power, computer controlled emissions. In fact they found that by doing so, they can STILL get more horsepower out of an engine than compared to the "OLD" horsepowered muscle cars. Now the "OLD ORIGINAL Muscle Cars" straight from hte factories in the mid 60's to mid 70's that people want to remain "ORIGINAL" then yes they have to be museum or show pieces as original parts for them are not available and taking them onto the streets, (with todays driver can almost asure either getting the car totaled or severe body damage too expensive to repair, unless you haev an unlimited wallet), and I don't mean re-manufactured aftermarket parts. People that own these factory muscle cars keep them in climate controlled buildings and only take them out to show, or run them once in a while when some muscle car show wants to do a show on that particaular muscle car. DANG, I miss those 60's-70's muscle cars!

Good! I really have nothing against quiet, "clean" electric cars, they seem pretty cool. Of course burning the coal to supply the charge to the batteries makes me wonder where the "carbon footprint" gets placed.

Just figuring we start cranking average homes up to 500 amp service and then we need to replace many transmission mediums/transformers and since we won't be building any new coal plants or nuke plants or hydro plants and those are the only realistic choices for the foreseeable future we get stuck pushing our electric cars one day per week. Unless of course something weird has happened to that old supply/demand math.

Get ready to pay electric bills higher than grocery bills.

Yeah they will need all there money that they will save in gas to pay the electric bill. In my opinion in the long run you will save zilch, notta, nothing after your electric bill doubles or even triples. What a joke! GM knows that is not the answer all they are doing is try to make the company look good . Take it from a guy who has been working on cars for 20 plus years this is all propaganda bull s%&$ !!!!!!!!!!!!
