THE CHISHOLM TRAIL HUNT

I'm a newbie too. I'm a little nervous too, only because I don't know anything. Read through these people's posts. I got a feeling that it's all about the fun. I just want to find some cool relics, something more interesting than the (s)crap iron I've been digging. I sure could use a new detector though. :)

The weather SHOULD be really nice and cool but this being Kansas, bring shorts AND a jacket. It should be 70's or 80's during the day. October is about the nicest time here. It should be perfect huntin weather.

I hope the stores stock up on batteries ;)

Rob,
I am somewhat of a newbie too. I have only been swinging a coil for 7 months. ::)

I too, want to find some cool relics. I hope too to absorb some hunting knowledge from some of the attendees and just have a good time. I know one thing; finding good stuff calls for a good location. It sounds like we have a good place to swing a coil there, so maybe we will get lucky. Looking forward to meeting you on the hunt. I am coming down to the hunt with Mastereagle 22.
We are both from Southeast Missouri. See ya,

Is anybody bringing their children? I need to have some ammo when I ask my ex if I can take him out of the state for a hunt. Also I would probably pull him out of a half day of school....Steve

I am bringing Mastereagle22. He is kinda like a child, only much bigger. :-X :-X ;D ;D ;D

Burdie

Heck, If I find a gold token...forget the hospital...call the coroner.

We will just dig a hole with our Lesche diggers and kick you in it. LOL ;D ;D

OK I have a few questions. Being a newbee and seeing how this is my first hunting event, anyone got any pointers??

I know this is supposed to be "competitive" but any of you have experience you would like to share?

What things should I come prepared for? What contingencies should I be prepared to handle? What type of shopping facilities are in the local area? If I forget to bring something can I purchase it nearby? What will the weather be like? How should a person dress for this event, thinking about that stars and stripes bikini here. ;D

What is the atmosphere like? I have run into detectorists that are funnloving people and I have met a few I wouldn't mind never seeing again. All in all I guess I am a little nervous. I don't want to show up and make mistakes and have people saying things like "man what a jerk" or laughing at me behind my back. Baldingboy only tells me I am a jerk every three or four times we go out hunting. ;D

I am super excited about this event and I cannot wait until October. Just requested the 5th off from work so I can get there early on Friday and meet all of you. I think it will be really cool to put faces with names and avatars.

Well anyway have a great day.
First of all great questions Mastereagle22. I do not consider this a compition hunt. Yes we have tokens for prizes but that is only a side benefit for this hunt. We have history in this area. This could be one of those sites. I can't guarantee what you will find but I am pretty sure something is out there from my research. As you may very well know that does not always pay off. That is where the prizes come in. I love the history of this community. My biggest thrill is going to see what artifacts you guys might find.

Just be your self and respect others. No alcohol allowed on the hunting site. Remember this is a hay field so don't excavate the area. He depends on this field for feed. Cover all holes back up please. Just treat Mr. Whites property like your own.

JD's hunt was like a family reunion that you wanted to go to. I created friendships that will last for ever. At JD's hunt I felt sad leaving my friends. I had so much fun it was great. My two reasons for putting on this hunt personally is to experience that great weekend again and to show off a small but neat community I call home. I can't speak for my two great friends Jeff and Evy. Without them I could not of pulled this off.

The stage will deliver batteries and other supplies on a weekly stop. ;D That is if the Indians are not out chasing customers into the casinos.

You are talking to a guy that LOVES to find zipper pulls! Everytime I find one any one around me laughs at me because they are like you found tash and you get excited? I am glad this is not a competive hunt because MDing is just plain fun to me and I don't want to feel like I have to "win" at anything. Besides I am not all that great at detecting as I am new to the hobby. I am buying a new machine so hopefully by the time this hunt rolls around I will have at least learned it enough to use it.

And to be a little cheesy here if that is okay, the most important thing I will come away from this hunt with, no matter what if anything I find, is the opportunity to meet some of the great people from this board and to talk with other people who love the hobby as I do. And I just want to say THANK YOU for all the effort you have put into hosting an event like this. And last but not least, I have never been to Kansas so after the hunt I will be able to say I have been. And I will leave my backhoe at home for this hunt. Thanks

Stan, have you hunted this area before? I know you have hunted a part of the trail, so tell us about some of your finds or what others may have found. I'm sure everyone will be interested. Monty

"I have never been to Kansas..."

Wait a minute, Mastereagle, you live in Missouri and you have never been to Kansas? :o :o :o Even Dorothy had been to Kansas.. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Actually, Kansas is a subdivision of Oklahoma...but don't tell Burdie....he/he ;D ;D ;D

I think you can look back over this thread and tell what type of people will be at the CTH......a bunch of fun loving metal detectorists. And, I have never met any of the group in person yet, except here on TNET. And, if I'm willing to drive 1,342 plus miles for this hunt, you can bet that I'm doing it because I love to have fun doing a fun hobby. I really do like the way that this hunt has been set up. I love history...and being given a chance to actually get to dig anywhere near the Chisholm Trail...well, all I can say is...thanks for the opportunity.

Tin Nugget, are you still heading up this way this month?

Burdie, glad we'e both here to help. The history of this region isn't as old as back east (200 years or more) but to tame this part of the country took a lot of hard work and strength to get it done. Those pioneers were tougher than nails just to stay alive and accomplish all that they did.

mastereagle22, think of Kansas as just like Missouri but flatter and with fewer rocks. ;)

borninok, Kansas is a subdivision of Oklahoma--ROFL when you think of the DustBowl, there's probably more of Oklahoma up there than you realize. ;)

I am mainly attending so that I can socialize with the other t-netters. I went to JD's hunt last year and only found a piece of lead and a knapsack buckle. If I find anything of monetary value on this hunt it will be icing on the cake. Last year I drove up on the morning of the hunt and missed out on the pre-hunt festivities. I look forward to sharing in the laughter this year....Steve

Just did a little research on Caldwell, can we start the hunt tomorrow?? Man this place looks cool.
Even if I don't find a thing just standing where so much history took place will be soooooooooooooo awesome.

Stoney, true.....true. Back in 2005 I was in Bahrain (600 miles south of Iraq) and got to see my first 4 straight day sandstorm. It really is hard to imagine the horrific conditions of the Dustbowl.

Wait a minute....bet Warsawdaddy has a song for us on the Dustbowl...right? ;D ;D

Oh...and Mastereagle....I get 50% of your good finds, right? After all, who steered you to this hunt, eh.....LOL

We'll negotiate something.

For you history buffs, I included some links that are useful. A side note the Chisolm Trail extends up into Montana via the Western Trail. The Western Trail goes Northwest of Caldwell and west of Caldwell (depending on the era) into Wyoming & Nebraska where there was a major railroad stockyard. The trail continues to Montana where some of the Texas ranchers started ranches up there. I have heard historians talk about the trails and some of the wild n wooly stories. So when Burdie and Stoney posted about this hunt I was enthusiastic.

So crazy question but has anyone ever hunted this area before? What kind of finds can we dream about finding around this location?

Here is a sample of what I have found on the Chisholm trail. Three of those items came from the site you are hunting. I hunted this site twice once to dig and once to put flags up. Both times I never covered more than a fourth of the place. I have been told that an old man hunted this place in the 70's I don't know if he did or not. An army camp 1893, crude shack for wiskey and women before that. PICT0001.webp

OHHHHH! Is that silver I see in that pic, Burdie! :o ;D

ME.....If this hunt is half as fun as the last hunt, you ain't gonna want to go home Sunday evenin'. We had the best time! This was my first group hunt as well. Everyone that was there that I had been 'sharing finds with' and 'chatting to' over the past two years was just as I thought they would be. Very friendly and helpful! No competition (well, 'cept for little Alex winning most of the raffle prizes on the Friday night before) :D, just lots of fun and I couldn't wait till everyone started coming in off the field and sharing what they had found. I'm looking foward for October to get here!! And if some of you are 'on the fence' about coming to the hunt....I suggest you sign up soon! ;D Gonna be lots of fun!!

Nana ;)
