THE CHISHOLM TRAIL HUNT

Monty, I was wondering the same thing. Being that this is my first hunt, I didn't want to ask a newbie question.

However, I think if we are digging and the item begins to resemble a coffin.....it probably would be best to cover it up...... ;D ;DLOL Either that or yell "GOLD" and move on to the next piece of ground when everybody else rushes over to dig. :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That reminds me of the graveyard scene in "Paint Your Wagon" and the coffin a-flyin' upwards as Lee Marvin hollers and stakes his claim.

I just need more sleep, I think...

Boy!. . .
With all the excitement this hunt is generating, you'd think nobody's been swinging their MD for three months :D. I'm really looking forward to this hunt, (my first ever) but, more importantly, I can hardly wait to meet a cool bunch of TNet members in "in person". Haven't felt this way since Christmas Eve when I was ten :D

Oh, I forgot, I love old historic stuff. . . and golf 8)

I'm a newbie too. I'm a little nervous too, only because I don't know anything. Read through these people's posts. I got a feeling that it's all about the fun. I just want to find some cool relics, something more interesting than the (s)crap iron I've been digging. I sure could use a new detector though. :)

The weather SHOULD be really nice and cool but this being Kansas, bring shorts AND a jacket. It should be 70's or 80's during the day. October is about the nicest time here. It should be perfect huntin weather.

I hope the stores stock up on batteries ;)

Rob, I am not sure what MD you are using but I will have my back up with me. It's an IDX/Pro and you are welcome to try it and use it if you like it. It is a very good detector.

Mel, I am a little bummed. There was a net saver this weekend on American Airlines. 169.00 round trip and I have to work Sat. But I will be up soon and hopefully you will be around. That 25 acres is just waiting. The good thing is even if it's hot most of it is wooded with mature hardwood trees for lots of shade. The thing that gets me going about that property is that it's right on Rt 29. As I am sure you know Rt 29 was one of the heaviest traveled roads during the Civil war. The property has a creek running through it and in reading Civil war diaries as best I can tell from the property to the Manassas battlefield would be less than a half days march for the troops making that area a perfect place to camp before going to battle in Manassas. Man, we really need to check that place out. Anyway, we will get there.

Tin Nugget, I will be here (Manassas) until the first week of September....will be in Rehoboth Beach, DE from Sep 1 thru 8, hunting the beaches there. And then I will probably start out around the last week of September for CTH. Usually takes me around 3 days or so to get to Oklahoma. If I get there early, I may bounce down to my hometown (Enid, OK) and do some cemetary visiting (relatives).

Roswell, I was thinking of the same scene.....Ha/ha... ;D ;D ;D

Nana, I'm booked until the 8th at the Ponca City Fairfield Inn, and then I will probably go down to Enid for a week. I have a cousin who lives in Wichita that I want to try to connect up with. While staying in Enid, I want to visit my uncle's farm in Wakita, OK. He's in poor health...plus, he said I could MD my grandparents' farm. So...I won't be in too much of a hurry to get back here to VA. Are you kidding?...to all of this traffic...and all of the politicians here? yuk. ;D ;D

All I can say, Burdie, is that maybe you should have made this a week long hunt.....ha/ha

The only hotel I can think of at about 15 mi. away is just east of I-35 and is the Economy Inn at
I-35 & Highway 166, South Haven, KS (14.50 miles away)
620-892-5271
I don't know if they have a hot tub or not.

Thank you for the offer. The detector I got for my son several years ago isn't very good, I'm not even going to bring it. The detector I'm bringing is my home made PI. Its a 3 foot coil on wheels. It's perfect for finding that Wells-Fargo strongbox ;) I built it for finding meteorites, but discovered that it's a relic magnet. We can cover a LOT of ground with it. I'll let everyone take a turn pushing it around. It doesn't pinpoint very well with that 3 foot coil. I usually place a flag and come back to pinpoint later. This is just what you need on your CW site.

Good News! Gold coin has arrived. I am not new to grading coins. The coin in the photograph shows some very light scratches. NOT the case. This coin is an easy MS 63. You might notice is a $750 to $850 coin. Believe me I wanted it!! It will go to some lucky Treasure hunter instead. Expect an offer before you leave the hunt. ;)

WTG, Burdie! Leave it to you guys to not only put on a great hunt but also make great prizes available! :o :o :o :o :o

Hey All! Evy here, I am so looking forward to Oct. But everyone needs to know that the reservations at both of these hotels have to be made by the 21st of Sept. or they release the rooms back to the market for sale, which means you may not be able to get a room here, the town may be full.
Oklahoma is celebrating its birthday and that is the day of the big centenial parade and I'm not sure what all else is going to be going on here.
I am no longer working at the Fairfield, but the group is still set there and the Holiday Inn.

See Everyone Soon!

I know I've missed being able to get in to detect... but I think I might try to fit it into my college schedule to be able to come out so I can meet everyone. :) Great job so far, Burdie!!!

That is one scary looking machine. Are you sure you aren't cooking yourself when running it? I cannot wait to see it and if you will let me run it for a few minutes.

What kind of depth do you get with that monster machine? How do you power it? Monty

If I hold a 55 gal barrel lid over my head, I still get a strong signal. I put the coil high enough to clear the vegetation. So I would say at least 4 feet into the ground on a large target. The smallest thing I have found is a 5/16 bolt about 3" long. It wasn't but a couple inches down, but I was surprised it could see something that small. It's powered by a 12V gel cell in a pouch on my belt. I kept the frame light, but the electronics and battery on my belt get a little heavy after a while. You can do a brisk walk, so it covers a LOT of ground.

Oh yes, it drives my old Garrett absolutely nuts if its nearby. I'll probably have to stay away from everyones detector.
