"The Olde School House" - 2nd Days Finds!

Hello Friends! :hello:

I went back to the old school house for a 2nd day of hunting today and was rewarded with some interesting finds! :icon_thumright: The morning started out pretty slow . . . I started by hunting in front and along the sides of the schools foundation. I found the lead "piggy" and a couple of pieces of the original handrail from the front stairs of the school. After that I only found a 1938 Canadian Penny and lots of pop bottle caps.

Following a break for lunch I turned my attention to the "playing field" next to the school, this is when the finds really started to pop up! ;D I started by finding an 1882 Canadian LC, my first 19th coin find too! Next I found the "Love Birds" charm, them BAM! :o I found two rings! Both are junkers, but the one with the blue stones certainly could be a candidate for re-plating and restoration! :icon_thumright: The 2nd ring with the clear stones fell apart when I cleaned it . . . but I saved the stones for future examination.

I then found a very solid, silver-plated spoon marked NEVADA D & A. With some on-line research I was able to determine it dates to about 1890 and was made by Daniel and Arter Ltd. of Birmingham, England.

Hope to get back there again this weekend!

Thanks for looking,
Dave

PS. Sorry about the picture quality, my wife's still in Toronto with our digital camera! :laughing7:

Dave,
A big congrats for breaking into the 1800's. :hello2: :occasion14: You can mark that one off your list of goals now.
I bet that was a heart stopper when you dug that ring up. Looks like a beauty.
Are you gridding off sections as you detect or still randomly poking around? Can't wait to see what else you pull up.
Looks like you've hit on a great spot!

Thanks very much Doug, nice of you to mention my 1800's penny! :D As I pulled it out of the plug I cleaned off the back with a little water (my spit :laughing7:) and I saw Victoria's bust! :hello2: I said out loud . . . "FINALLY AN 1800'S COIN"! :o

You hit my hunting technique spot on with this site so far Doug! :laughing7: I keep thinking to myself, "where would the kids go to either hide or to get out of the teachers line of site"? I'm sure kids then behaved similar to how my 8 year old daughter and her friends do now at school. :icon_thumright:

Yesterday afternoon I concentrated on a small area about 200' square in the back corner of a field. This is where I've found most of the old coppers and the spoon. I'll work a grid pattern starting after my next hunt, as I feel the back partion of the school and the foundation still hold some good potential!

All the best to you Doug,
Dave

It's funny you should mention the pig hikeinmts, because I got really excited when I found it too! :laughing7: Growing up I liked to play with all kinds of animal toys (of course mine were made of plastic) and I always ended up losing them in the backyard! :icon_scratch: I hope this little piggy brings me luck too!

Thanks for your post and take care of yourself in South Korea!

Hey Herbie :hello:

The spoon is really heavy and it's in great shape. But there's not a lick of silver left on it. I'm contemplating whether I should restore it and get it re-silvered? :icon_scratch: Not that it'll ever be worth anything . . . I was just thinking I might have our family initial "K" put on the handle and pass it on to my daughter. It's probably around 120 years old and I think it's worth it to preserve it. Maybe I'm taking this "restoration" idea too seriously though? :dontknow:

What do you think?

Hope you and Laurie have a great July 4th weekend!

Re: "The Olde School House" - 2nd Days Finds!

Found your "pig in a poke" I found a red/pink plastic pig it is always in my finds box when we do show and tell at our club meetings. It was one of the first toy's that I ever found. Just kind of neat. Great finds just a matter of time until the silver comes. HHHH
