I promised myself years ago I was never going to get involved in another discussion about the right to own a gun. My roommate at the time was a liberalist and we went back and fourth for months while respecting each other's opinions. In the end, we realized that neither one had put so much as a doubt in the others mind. This school shooting has rocked my world. My friends, families, and patients have all called me with questions. The prevailing one, "Why would somebody do something like that." Patients who have been exposed to violence in the past have come in to talk. Vets that I treat for PTSD have had a massive surge in nightmares and flashbacks. Parents are panicking and afraid to drop their kids off at school. So, knowing that I am the minority, I'm going to vent here. I have a few statements and questions. These are not meant to pick a fight. I would welcome intelligent counterpoints.
1. Nobody is suggesting we take away the right to bear arms. It is the right to own assault rifles we want to limit. What is wrong with this? (please do not use the slipperly slope argument. no intelligent scholar places stock in that.)
2. People cite the wisdom of the founding fathers as a reason backing up the right to bear arms. When the founding fathers wrote the Bill of Rights they meant the right to defend ones freedom from tyranny. Assualt rifles did not exist. Do people think they need guns to fend off the government and have a civil war? If not, why can't a simple handgun suffice for personal defense uses.
3. If this shooting does not change your mind about guns...what type of tragedy would? 100 kids, 1000 kids, 1,000,000 kids. Give me a number so I can keep tally and know when we are getting close.
4. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." What is the purpose in pointing this out? Does anybody believe that a gun gets up all on its own and kills somebody?
I know I am venting and ranting. I'll take my beat down like a man.
