It's the variety!
No pics in this post, but you know what most of this stuff looks like so I'll just give you the details..
I got permission to hunt a private yard in my neighborhood for about 45 minutes before I picked up my son from school..they foreclosed on this house up the street and just emptied it out and put up the "FOR SALE" sign.
Anyway, as soon as I saw the sign, I called the RE lady and got the OK to hunt the yard.
When I arrived, I turned on the detector and hit my first target in less than 10 seconds. It was a clad dime. The second target was a 1954 silver Washington quarter. A few more minutes into the hunt I found a pocket spill of small change, but nothing old. A few minutes later I found another 1964 silver Rosie (just found one yesterday in another yard). Next I found a 1950-P wheat penny..then I found a small sterling ring. I was having a ball at this place! The yards in my neighborhood are about 50 years old and have about a 60-40 "good target" to "junk target" ratio.
One of the last things I dug in the front yard was a Tootsie Toy Jaguar to add to my growing TT collection.
Still pressed for time, I headed to the back yard. By the gate, I dug up a lockset to an entry door. Then in the back yard near the patio, I quickly found an old Junior Police badge in good shape. Next I got the exciting "50 cent" reading on my display. Hoping for the best, I dug very slowly around what I thought was another silver half. To my dismay, it was a 1985-P Kennedy. However, I still took much delight in finding it.
I did a pretty decent "look-see" for a yard of that size, but I'm heading back again tomorrow to see if there's more good stuff to find. Wish me luck!
