I'm terrible at tight rope walking. Seriously. Knowing this, I generally try to stay away from it, and if it's called for at work, I delegate it to others. Yeah buddy, if they strung a rope across Royal Gorge today and called me to come walk it, I'd just be terrible at it, I'll bet.

Drywall. Did contracting for years and did drywall a hundred times but was just never happy with my results. Maybe I'm just too anal-retentive but I could spot flaws everywhere I looked.

And staying married....seems to be a big problem for me...tried it 4 times and I'm single now.

Drywall encompasses two aspects; hanging and finishing.
In the realm of hanging, many aspects come into play. Knowledge of math and geometry are important for figuring total sheets to be purchased. It goes without saying that the plumbing and electrical must be completed, inspected and ready to "cover."
Then there are local codes that dictate how many screws/nails are required to hang drywall, per statutes of said codes.

The finishing side is an art.
(I have actually testified in court, and said that a friend was an artist based on
his applications in drywall finishing. He won the case.)

I have found that several thin coats of mud reduces sanding intensity. Also, I use a mixture of mud that includes dish soap to reduce "bubbling" of the dried application. When you are finished with the "tape and mud" aspect, when the paint hits the wall, you can't tell where the rock's joints are!
And ceiling textures are my favorite. Have you heard of, "Spanish Fan?" It's a West Coast phenomenon from the late 70's.

Boy - when you are right, you are right. When I first started drywalling - first, it took me forever, second, my taping and mudding was - well, I made myself a WHOLE lot of extra work, and third - I never knew (when I started) that drywall had a direction. (duh).

Luckily, we have a friend who was kind enough to make me his "helper", and boy, did I learn alot. He got an extra hand, and I got an education.
(an education and a half-he just hung perfect drywall-flawless - but then, he'd been doing it for 30 years, too).

But, I still have mudding problems with corners. I always end up doing them at least twice, usually more. :laughing7:

Isn't it a pain to KNOW how it is done, and still not be able to do it right on the first shot? (sigh)

Drywall - NEVER again !

When I built my house, decided to save a few bucks and do it all myself.................

Hung the sheets in no time. Mudding ?? WEEKS upon WEEKS to get the whole house to look decent (and I know where all the awww $#!+$ are).

Nope, NEVER again...... Like insulation and waste plumbing - it don't pay to do it yourself (not for me anyways)

Last year, I alone remodelled the whole house of my friend. (3 Bedroom, single story) Plumbing, electrical, structual, etc.,:
I did it all. Of course, to code. It's me, Scott! (what did you expect?...)
When I got to the drywall, I knew that I was on my way to bein' a winner! :hello2:

One day, I want to build my own house/shelter in the mountains, living off the land....

PS. I can do any project; commercial or private and could build my own house all the way from
operating the backhoe,(or shovel) to digging the
foundation, framing, everything to the final roofing, painting, (your choice of colors...)
It matters not; I can do it all.

I know what you mean!!!

We are on our 4th house (we built top to bottom), and, while we know how to do it all (to code and above), the mind is certainly way more willing than the body is capable.

What used to take us a day, now takes us a week, what used to take a week takes a couple of weeks, or more.

Luckily for us, we come from that ranch/farm background where you learn early how to fix/build/repair, etc. But, while the brain still knows how to do something, sometimes, the body complains.

(and it still takes me forever to finish off the corners of drywall.)

And, have you ever noticed that, the older you get, the more you make work for yourself? Seems like most folks my age - even though, technically retired, do more than we did when we were working full time.

We haven't even finished up the house we live in, and we got a 1920's house to renovate. (something I have always wanted to do - even though we have had a couple, we sold them before they were 100% done - this one - is NOT going to be sold, so this one is going to be a long, slow, maybe two years or so renovation). I think, somewhere in the back of my mind - I figure I cannot die until I have finished all my work - so I will never be finished!!!

I'm terrible at being a handy man, I've tried and tried, but I'm just no good. When we were in a house, I did what I had to do but it wasn't pretty by any means. I once made a simple table, 4 legs and a top, for on the patio. I measured out the legs using a tape measure, measured/checked/measured again/ re-checked, double checked to be sure. All 4 legs came out a different size and none were the size I measured. Some people can build a house and fix anything and some people just try to get those other peoples phone number cause we need help...lol

I'm over 60, so I just blame it on old age - I say that I am now in the time of my life where I can start cultivating "crotchity speech", and get away with it. :thumbsup:

That will get you less ulcers in the long run - though, I've never been known to NOT speak my mind. But, that's because of 4 reasons. (a) I was raised that murder was less offensive than lying - (b) I have a bad memory - so, its very difficult to keep lies straight, which leads to (c), I'm too lazy to try to keep track of lies and (d) the worse one, is, I like to look at people I'm talking or listening to, and I cannot look anyone in the face and lie - so, on the rare occasions I have lied, it didn't take long for someone who knows me to know I'm lying - I will look down, up, over, around - but not at, the person I am trying to lie to. So, I'm not good at it. Hey, that's my parents fault - hmmmm - they didn't teach me to lie........ :coffee2:

I've found the best way to mud drywall corners is to tape and mud on the first application. Then, when dry, go back and sand. Then apply thin coat of mud to just one side and let that dry. Then mud the other side. All with thin coats. (I hate sanding) Sure, it might take a couple extra days, but you only have to worry about trowel work on one side at a time.
