This stone has made me wonder! Certain characteristics say wood (outer sides), then other parts (top, bottom) with jetblack melted wavy crust with no age rings and what looks like rust spots plus straight line gouges 1/8 in.wide and deep has me saying no! Anyone seen the likes like this or have any info?...Thanks.

It's hard to tell if it is petrified wood. If you can't see any tree rings then my guess is that it may be a piece of broken volcanic tube. It doesn't look like basalt, but it does look like volcanic material. But it is a curious piece non the less.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks old digger, this one I discovered about 20yrs. ago along the banks of the Wapiti River in Northern Alberta (Eastside of The Rockies), along with dino fossils... also elk and buffalo bones I dug out dated "20,000 yrs old or more" they said.
So volcanic could be very true. Volcanic tube is new to me...so thanks for the info.
This piece is on average 4 1/2" L x 2 1/2" H x 1 1/2" W......weight is 1.42 lbs.
I've not checked volcanic material weights yet.
Thanks Again.
