Third Hunt and Third 1700's Copper....1771!!!

Joe and I hit the site at just before sunrise, with the mist
still coming down. @0 minutes in I unearth this lare Copper,
and turn to look for Joe, to let him know, and he was walking
up to me with a GRIN and his own Copper.

That was my most significant find of the day. Here are a few
"cleaned up" shots for those of you that are experts in the area
of colonial coppers (Don and Ironpatch and anyone else).
Maybe you guys can steer me right before I call this one
by name.
I'm beginning to wonder if they didn't make counterfeits at this
location. Along with my 3 imitations, Howard and Joe have
both found what appear to be planchets. Clean as a whistle.
Not just unreadable, but clean and smooth.

Ty, 1771 is very probable for your KGIII counterfeit. I checked my Machin's Mills plates and the reverse does not match the 1771 Machin's Mills coin, so most likely one of the many counterfeits. I could almost say I see 1771 also, but photos are "funky" at times. ::)

Regardless, you all have a great site there and wish you more old goodies in the future.

Not only have your finds been great, but the info that Don and Iron Patch are providing on these old coins is just as good.

Congrats TY on another SWEET Coppa.

Reading thru Don & Ironpatch's replys sheds lite on some of my oldie King Geo's

The ground you dug that one in must be harsh ...it has that green patina that is only on the surface and will flake off :dontknow:

I hope you get back to that area soon and pound it 6 ways to Sunday..Gotta be many more :icon_thumleft:

Thanks Derek. I had one coin that had more patina than this one
and when I cleaned it, the detail faded immensely. So I think I'll stick
to a light peroxide bath to remove the embedded soil but not the
patina.

instead of his find been a so called "counterfeit", maybe it is the real deal and possibly a version of a coin that has not been seen for 237 years.
There could be coins and versions of coins out there our generation knows nothing about and his find might be a spectacular find, instead of a "counterfeit".

I don't think there's much of a chance of that, the Brits. kept pretty good records.

...and even if there is such a thing found if there's no known record of it, it basically does not exist. That's considering both sides are struck with unknown dies as would be the case with this particular coin.

The term counterfeit is very appropriate and books and articles written explain rather well what went on with our early copper coinage. There are many sources of information about the Colonial era counterfeits, for those interested in increasing their knowledge of the coppers I suggest start with becoming familiar with what is written on the Notre Dame Website.

Bottom line, it is the Counterfeit copper which hold the collectors interest in America and it is the Counterfeit copper which is desired for collections, due to so many different types and styles available. Counterfeit is not a bad term when talking colonials, it is good.

The term counterfeit is very appropriate and books and articles written explain rather well what went on with our early copper coinage. There are many sources of information about the Colonial era counterfeits, for those interested in increasing their knowledge of the coppers I suggest start with becoming familiar with what is written on the Notre Dame Website.

I guess i should just appologize, but maybe also say, is it possible his coin was a test pattern that got out of the mint the same way some of the american coins have

I think it is awesome the way you guys find those old coppas and can identify them. I only hope to find one someday.

I have ordered scales in order to weigh the coins.
Once I get the weights, we should be able to tell
for sure, from what I understand.
