First, welcome to the forums. Second tell your friend he is one lucky guy. Before I attempt to ID the button you might get more replies if you post it in the "What is it" section just above this one on the main page.
Now for your friends button. According to Albert's button book it is described as follows:
AY 30 Artillery, 2nd regiment 1808(?); slightly convex, 1 piece.
A. The inscription UNITED STATES ARTILLERY encircling a pile of 6 cannon balls. "Armitage Phila Best Quality" raised mark button measures 23mm. Rarity value 100
