This can't be normal

I was recently given a garrett gta 350 and have noticed that when the cable is bumped or wiggled the detector emits tone. Is this normal or do I need to replace the coil?

That’s normal. Wrap the wire up the shaft. Make sure it’s not to tight (just so that it doesn’t flap) or it could pull the wire out of the coil.

also tape the cord to the shaft about 3 inches up from the coil

I do similar to Perses but use electrical tape. I go straight up the back of the lower shaft and start wrapping the coil wire around from there up. I change coils by changing lower shafts and it makes it easier as well. Keeps the coil wire out of briars etc and helps on false signals when you bump it.
