Clad factories are pretty good, in that they seem to always

be regenerating. Good for morale, sometimes, to walk around picking up quarters. :)

But, clad "farms" are modern places built on top of old places.

There is still the clad but there's always the potential for an old surprise.

Like today's.

First of all, there was this piece:

2017 (610).jpg
2017 (611).jpg
2017 (612).jpg
2017 (613).jpg

My first impression is a small crotal bell but
it seems so solid! Apparently brass. Doesn't seem to
be magnetic. Fairly heavy too. :dontknow:

And....let me just cut to the chase. Today was a really long "walk"
and....OMWBTTC.....I got this hit:

2017 (608).jpg

I was VERY tired at the moment. I took one look and said,
"Oh Fine! Another clad quarter and this one is totally useless, bent! :( ":BangHead:

Then, I checked the date.... 19 OHHHHH two!!!!!?? LOL

Here's the rest:

2017 (609).jpg
2017 (614).jpg

I think Fishy's planning a trip! ;)

2017 (615).jpg

Had a really hard life..such a shame!
Look at the condition of this coin, otherwise.
Even a full "LIBERTY"!

Think I should try to straighten her out?

At least the day made me smile.

Thanks for peeking!

The balls in the crotal bells were iron and when they rusted they would fill up the whole interior of the bell making it solid with rust. Nice barber!

Congrats on your finds Whadi. I am with the rest, I would straighten that quarter out between 2 boards in a vice, and turn the handle very slowly. I also think your other item is a crotal bell that filled up with a substance to make it heavy. You can clearly see the top, the holes, and the slit that would be along the bottom.

It's a crotal bell, and being small it would of rusted up. 95% of the bells will clean up easy enough so the ball comes loose and it rings again. Having dug bells that are 100-400yrs old this rings true.

Congrats on the silver a crisp one at that!

Looks good to me, but I would put it in a vice between two pieces of wood and straighten it out. Should look pretty good then. I have done it many times with good results. Congrats.

Thanks to all for the hints on the crotal. This is what I was led to believe when I first dug it up. The only thing that made me have a slight doubt was that it's not attracted to a magnet *at all*. (I know that ferrous oxide wouldn't be, but that makes me think this thing must be quite old! How long would it take to rust so completely!?)

Also, I haven't proved my theory yet, but, it seems to me that the actual brass side walls seem to be inordinately thick for a bell.
maybe a
Anyway, thanks for the input and I'm planning on soaking it in some oil for as long as it takes to free up the rust. I'll apprised.

About the quarter, I've never tried to straighten a silver quarter before. Let alone one this nice! I figured a vice, some wood, maybe
a bit of cloth. But, I'm thinking that maybe a couple solid pieces of rubber too? To try to keep scratches to a minimum?

Any thoughts?

Cast crotal bells like yours from what I have seen are thicker because they are sand cast in contrast to the much more thin stamped then soldered crotals. Both examples have been around a while but the oldest types are cast. That being said I have found examples of stamped crotals from the 1600s and cast from the mid 1800s. The thicker examples are cast in sand because the metal needs larger channels to flow and the iron ball is placed in the sand and when the cast is made the ball remains in the newly cast brass cage after the sand is removed. The iron ball is too large to escape. I'm not sure how long it takes to rust solid like that.

Awesome! Congrats!
Old silver with great detail!
For sure straighten out the beautiful old coin.

That's one trip Blingie may not need his passport for. Lol!
The ticket is bigger than him.
Fishy seems interested in a little travel too.

See that your old silver coins are floating to the surface. That has really nice detail.
The trail back to the car seems to be a magical one at times.

The round brass does look like a bell.
Other than that the only thing i can think of is a screw on brass knob for furniture or a lamp. The threaded part could account for the amount of rust in it. But thats just a guess.

Now that was an awesome long walk, well worth it!
