This weeks slim pickin's

Officially, the woods are evil! (not really)
Fully grown with Kudzu* and poison oak, and ivy and snakes and spiders :D

But I still temp fate by venturing in.
I manage to get lucky once in a while, finding a rare dirty button or scarce fertilized coin, but the full satisfaction is just getting out where our forefathers of the 1700's pillaged and scampered about.

This weeks finds include a bunch of Native American point shards, some 1800's civilian buttons, old lock, a really modest old coin that doesn't want to tell it's age or show it's face, a tiny, heavily gilted buckle, a pewter handle with the partial mark of "Lyn &co".... Anyone?
A copper "diamond shaped" .....? what is it?
And my favorites, old nails.

*Kudzu is a plant in the genus Pueraria in the pea family Fabaceae, It is a climbing, coiling, and trailing vine native to southern Japan and southeast China. Its name comes from the Japanese name for the plant, Kuzu.

Kudzu is sometimes called gé gēn[1] (Chinese: 葛根), and (due to its out-of-control growth in the Southeastern United States) has earned such nicknames as the "foot-a-night vine", "mile-a-minute vine", and "the vine that ate the South" (of the United States).

In Vietnam, it is called sắn dây.

That is a Crackerjack of a knee buckle! They just don't come any nicer than that--and I consider that a Quality find.

Bravo to you for a woods hunt. It's not easy this time of year.

Best Wishes,

Buckles
Thanks Wil.
I appreciate that.
After about 15 minutes in those woods and your clothes are just soaked from sweat. I recall a photo of you last year, sweating like that. LOL
The one in the car. :D

Mike, you really mopped up on the old buttons. That buckle is a dandy and loaded with gold gilt. Is it from a small shoe or what? You had a good week for this time of year.
I wish you had not educated Dman on Kudzu. I had him convinced they were all sweet potato vines.
WTG Mike and stay cool, Quindy.
I fooled you Quindy. I always knew sweet potatoes came from sweet potato trees on sugarland mountain.
Mike, are you real sure you want him in North Carolina? Good hunting, Quindy.

You two are crazy. You should have your own comedy show. ;D
I think there used to be a promotional sales pitch on TV about Kudzu. The slogan was- "Kudzu - It will grow on you." ;D

Mikey,
Very nice finds buddy. You Sir are a diehard detectorist. I'm hoping you uncover a cache one day for your efforts. :icon_thumleft:

Yeah. That was one of the hottest hunts of the year--or ever, for that matter. :D If you search my name, and "knee buckles" in quotes on Tnet, you'll see two similar gilded buckles from an early 1800s/late 1700s site in Kentucky this spring. Neither have the amount of gilding that yours has.

Cheers,

Buck

Yeah these two!
Doug, I'm going to have to put one with you, way on the other side of the field. Then take the other with me on the opposite side, just so they don't start scrappin in the corn stubble. :laughing9: :tongue3:

Sounds good. We'll have to flip for who gets who. I'm hoping to get the lightest of the two, since I'll probably have to carry him back across the field. Or maybe the slowest of the two in case we are getting shot at. :o ;D :icon_scratch:

Re: This weeks slim pickin's

Awesome finds Mike. Boy I gotta give ya credit for hunting the woods this time of year. I bet it was hot. I can't wait until fall gets here to make it a lot more comfortable to hunt. See you soon.

Re: This weeks slim pickin's

Quindy's not hard to take care of. All you have to do is give him a rock and tell him there's a bullet in it and he will spend all day trying to get it out.

Nice pewter button. :icon_thumright:

The gilt little buckle I have found in the passed, always thought them to be either on a Victorian Ladies Shoe, or hat :-\

The site I found my two buckles at (nearly identical designs, same iron crosspiece, and same size) was late 1700s until about 1830. Nothing later at that site at all. Not even a suspender clip or two piece button. The only coin was a crisp 1817 Large Cent, and many of the buttons were pewter or tombac. I felt that the buckles were from the earlier part of that time frame, since I have dug many, Many 1830s sites in my area and never found buckles like those.

BB

Hello 4h, I am finally on this site. We all had fun hunting for stolen jewelry with you and Mark. I have to tell you though, I now have POISON IVY. Thanks 4h. ;D Dave P

Re: This weeks slim pickin's

Some really nice finds. :icon_thumright:

Re: This weeks slim pickin's

Nothing worse than kudzu...'cept poison ivy, snakes, bugs and 100 degree temps! :tongue3: :D Heck, I thought that nasty kudzu was an Alabama exclusive. :-X Wonder who the nut was that thought it a good idea to bring it here? :violent1:
You're finds are much more than you give them credit for in those extreme conditions! :icon_thumright:

Nana
