Hit a small yard today the original house on the property burnt down in the 1800s. The house that is there now was built in the 20s. It was a small yard so I didnt expect to find to much, Boy was I wrong I got a deep iffy signal about 5 feet away from a big tree stump. I decided to dig got down about 6 inches and it was still in the hole at that point I thought probably iron. So I dig a little more and take out a handful of dirt and there it was a gold pocket watch ;D it tested at 10k and weighs 17 grams. Ive always wanted to find a gold pocket watch so I couldn't be more happy. Thanks for looking and HH. I brought the watch to a jeweler and he told me it is not solid gold. He did say it contains gold but is worthless :sad10:. Sorry everyone I gave it an acid test here at home and really thought I had gold.

Sounds like your jeweler is full of it. Of course its not solid gold, only the case is gold and that is 10k according to your test. If it came out of the ground that nice then its gold. See if you can open up the back of the watch and see who made it. There might be a karat stamp inside as well. Dont be glum, its a great find, and it is much more than your jeweler made it seem to be. Try a watch maker, those are better at that sort of thing.

When you posted the original picture I thought it was gold filled, but I agree with Narth on this one. If it cleaned up as nice as it did, it is most likely gold. I have found quite a few gold filled ones, and they all have corrosion. None cleaned up like yours.

beautiful find! Sure looks like Gold, I think your jeweler is pulling your leg

If he said that it did contain gold, but was worthless, then find another jeweler. Getting the feeling that he didn't like having to do any work to extract anything valuable from it, due to the corrosion of "innards". Beautiful item, fantastic find. Have you thought about trying to open it?

What does the back plate of the watch say inside? Also you need to file down a ways to get past possible plating, for a true read of whether it is gold or not.
