Hey yall. Well as Mirage said in his post, today was a heck of a day of detecting, thanks to one pocket spill of 3 coins. I don't think I'll be topping this one for a while. This site is a school that was built in the 50s I think. We've found a decent amount of modern silver from the site since Dan discovered it a couple years ago. Mirage had found a seated half dime in the field the first time we detected the site. We never really knew what to think of that find; I was wondering if it had been a show-and-tell item or something. We didn't find anything else indicating that kind of age. But we think we can rule out the show-and-tell scenario now. So I was wandering around, picking up a good amount of clad and a wheat or two, and decided to wander into the area where Mirage found that seated 2 years ago. I hadn't been in this area in a while...there's a lot of deep, large trash targets that sound like morgans at 9 inches deep. That in conjunction with a noticeable lack of silver and clad compared to the other areas made for a kinda annoying area to hunt. But what the heck. Eventually I got a signal that sounded pretty decent, kind of like a zinc penny. Figured I'd get it out of the way. Cut the plug and flipped it over and saw the imprint of a coin in the plug. I scooped some dirt out and sifted it around in the grass, and saw this:
I couldn't belive it. My first half dime, I thought. I assumed it was a seated like Mirage's had been. I picked it up and realized that it was actually one of those Canadian "fishscales." Still pretty sweet, still a first. I marked the hole with an empty plastic gatorade bottle that I found laying around in the field so that Mirage could see where it was found, and took a few steps out from the hole and kept on detecting. I circled the area and wandered out further. After about 10 minutes I decide that it might be a good idea to recheck the hole...I'm glad I went back. A few inches from the fishscale hole, I got a signal that sounded a lot more trashy, but it was still bouncy and it was anyone’s guess as to what it was…so I decided to just dig it…psh...as if it was going to be another 1800s coin. I flipped the plug and saw a small silver coin sitting in the middle of the plug. It was so worn I couldn’t tell what it was at first…but you can probably tell from the pics:
Yea, talk about shock. It was for me, at least. Well before I touched it I hunted down Mirage from the other side of the field and had him take a look. After the celebration, I flipped the plug back and was about to walk away thinking that I got the rest of the drop, but had to check it once more. This time, and I wasn’t sure at first, but in between the two plugs, I got another signal. This one sounded about the same as the the bust half dime. Oh yea! I had Mirage check it and he agreed that it was weird and bounced into the bottlecap range now and then. So I dig, and chop the dirt around in the hole, and then see this:
Wow!
And that one WAS the last one…except for some iron nearby that we were debating digging out.
Found some clad on the surface…thought this pic was kinda funny, it was before I picked up the coins.
So a day of detecting that I’ll never forget. It was cool that Mirage was there too in the middle of the action and got to check out some of the signals too. Thanks for lookin yall, hope you guys score some yourselves! HH
