Interesting u traded 8.8736 ounces of silver in 40%'s to 7 ASE's. I just can't justify the loss of actual silver. I know all the arguments for upping to 90% of .9999, and the cool factor of reducing the other 60% of clad metal in those 3 rolls for pure ASE. That's almost 2 ounces lost. Braver man than I. I wont every troy ounce i can get my hands on no matter what form right now. Ag is Ag. Anyway congrats and u got what u wanted!
There's no place in my heart for 40% junk halves. Goes back to when I was young in the late 70's and they were worthless, and that's ingrained in my crh'ing blood. I consider them a stepping stone to purchase pretty coins lol. Besides, I'd rather stuff my sayfdeposit with 90%, junk silver takes up too much valuble space. ffd

There have been long periods of time in the past when 40% was very unwanted and if you sold to a dealer/refiner you would get a very low percentage of silver spot.

That is not the way it is now with all kinds of junk silver being in demand; people are actually buying $1000 face junk bags of 40% (I don't know why that is). But in the future who knows what will happen? If somebody finds 40% at face and sells it to buy other silver or gold, they are not really losing ounces if they got the coins at face value. They are still coming out ahead, but maybe not the maximum amount ahead if they lose a couple of ounces in the transaction as you stated.

But if silver enters another period where 40% is shunned for some reason, those holders of 40% will lose ounces in their sell transaction and people like FFD who traded 40% for .999 will come out ahead.

If history serves any guide: back in the early 80s when silver peaked, 90% was being sent to the refiner along with sterling flatware because everyone was cashing in. People selling their 90% got way below spot value when silver hit 50 (cannot imagine what they got for their 40%). Pure .999 being sold was less likely to be sent to the refiner according to a coin dealer I know who was in the business back then. Also, it brought a higher price when sold than did any form of junk silver.

No way to know for sure what the future holds though.

Jim
