Hi,
Taking a long leave of absence and travelling to visit family in Pakistan (from Australia), taking my Deus along. Even though i'm a total Nube with the Metal Detector, given the rich history of that part of the world I am hoping to make some good finds (touch wood they will let my detector through). I may from time to time seek advice on detector settings/coin/relic cleaning and post photos of any finds.

Hopefully with a low frequency setting I can see deep and find stuff from the Mauryan, Greek or Kushan Era

Hi Menander, sounds like an interesting trip, definitely a lot of history waiting to be discovered. Just be sure you know the law about detecting, you definitely don’t want to spend anytime in one of their prisons - someone from your embassy could likely point you in the right direction concerning the law about detecting. Good luck with your hunts. Walt PS pretty good odds that someone on this board knows the law/rules

Mate I grew up there before I moved to Aus in the 90's so I got contacts (lol true about the prisons), as long as you don't disturb an archaeological site there's no drama. The people the authorities are interested in catching are the scum bags who dig up and smuggle thousands of years old Buddhist statues overseas (big money involved). France recently returned 6000 year old relics that had been smuggled from one of the earliest settlements that existed in Pakistan.

The GOP has banned the import of the following items: arms and ammunition, high explosives,
radioactive substances, security printing, hazardous chemicals, currency and mint, alcoholic beverages.

Looked at several other sites, and saw that you might have to pay an
small import duty, but otherwise it looks good.

You've found a great place for information and fellow treasure hunters of all kinds -- welcome aboard mate! :skullflag::occasion14:

Welcome to Tnet from Mississippi and lots of luck.

I imagine it might be a little risky but I would think the passes thru the Hindu Kush mountains would have great exploration potential since they were the main travel and invasion route from Central Asia.

Hi Samanthy,
The closer you get to the Afghan border at certain places the riskier it gets plus the distances become too great from Islamabad where ill be based. Ill have to use some imagination though as the commonly known places would have been covered by other detectorists.

The best place would be the Swat valley which was the heart of Gandhara Buddhist Civilization (600 BC - 600 AD). Swat saw a lot of trouble some years ago but is now very peaceful. I will definitely try there (suits me since its such a scenic place to go hiking as well).

Would you be able to get access to Taxila? That was a long time commercial center. Also you might want to check out the old caravan routes especially caravanserai and springs or watering holes.

Taxila is right next door but I reckon every man and his dog would have detected there and found a lot of good stuff so don't know if theres much left (maybe they didn't have a deus so..) I will give taxila a go considering its less then an hour away (always wanted to see the ruins and the museum anyway). There are obviously restrictions at the Buddhist Archeological sites and Mauryan/Greek ruins (area around it is agricultural land so no restrictions just ask the farmers).

(caravans/watering holes) Yes I am thinking exactly along those lines, the ancient travel route the armies took from afg to india passes right by there (through taxila on towards the salt range mountains). Moghul emperors built huge wells where caravans used to stay, they are still there (id love to find moghul coins and theres prob a realistic chance since that was only 300-400 years ago).

Some of the stuff I'm hoping to find may have been buried too deep considering thousands of years have passed, lets see.
