Hi all,
Since the key is within the text, I decided to go back and spend sometime with it instead of the illustrations for awhile.? So here are a few thoughts that I'd like someone to help me expand on.? The most obvious place for MS to have placed a key in the text is in the unmarked, ethereal dream chapter.? So this is the one that I focused my energy on.? The "Moon like, moon like..." poem seems to draw our attention to the crecent shaped dandelions found throughout the book.? The thing is that we only see the white form of the dandelion, which interestingly enough is known as the "dandelion clock" (form answers.com).? An earlier series of posts seemed to touch on the issue of the dandelions indicating specific times.? Going form this, the poem says "..Dreamer one on ending..." The end of the dream "chapter" is a reference to 'noon tomorrow'.? It seems that time/clock may be part of the key.? A couple of unexplained links to this include: a 'missing' dandelion clock (46, 83) and the largest number of seeds on a single page (77).
Also, someone earlier talked about the fact that everything that happens in Zac's dream comes true (crystal Pook, grotto, finding the jewels/Ana...).? But what about the box enigma?? The text doesn't ever say that he sees an actual box when he stands at the mouth of the grotto.? Instead, what he sees is a hand.? Now, the only link that I can seem to make is that there are certainly five (fingers) to a side and that the sport of boxing is a hand sport.? But what new things does he see that he can fill it with?? (With name in hand? the faeries know...)
Also, something else that I would like to know is why Ana can't escape for the tree herself?? In the text, it says that Zac runs into the grotto, finds her, and then "His hand? touched the willow stump then Ana's hand ."? After that it was just a matter of breaking the limbs of the tree to free her.? Interesting that it is Ana's hand that he touches, and even more interesting is that MS says that he touches the willow stump first.
These are just attempts to bring the text into focus.? Hopefully, you all have noticed similar things and can help me to start ellaborating on these thoughts.? Also, if there are any Tolkien fans out there, The Hobbit seems to have influenced MS's writing a bit...? Any chance pg. 41 says 'elven code'?
