I always wear headphones in public. My hearing is bad and I am still able to tell what is going on around me. If you constantly make right and left zig-zags you can keep an eye on all that goes on around you. It's my belief that the loud beeps given off by your detector upsets many more people than just a quiet detectorist with headphones on.

Yoi! This is where situational awareness comes to play.

I was oblivious one day in the isolation of my Black Widow headphones and was startled by a woman getting "in my face" about stealing because I was detecting. That was a minor situation to diffuse (showed her my pouch contents - which had a rusty utility knife blade removed from where her kids were playing).

Since then I switched to a one ear-piece Rattler so I can keep one ear on the environment. I also scan my surroundings visually fairly often.

I also carry a S&W 9 Shield every day, all day.

I hunt all over NYC. I have been harassed by a few young punks over the years. I'm fortunate in that nothing has ever developed into an all out war.
NYC, Chicago, Atlanta, ect.,, just being in the wrong place at the wrong time with some crazy looking to do the wrong thing. We had a female police officer assassinated 2 days ago by a convict schizophrenic who wasn't taking his meds. He hated cops. Two other police officers put him out of his misery.
Hunting in the woods of Pennsylvania, I will carry a sidearm because of wild critters. I would hate to have to use it in self defense. After living in NYC for 66 years, I would hope the violence is behind me.

Three things...never wear white ankle socks with tennis shoes, I guess the mace/pepper spray is so they don't see you shoot them? and third "GET A DOG". But bottom line it is hard to always be on guard but ponder being attacked and actually practice what you would do if you are. Setting up "practice" routines could very well save your butt in the future.

That really makes me angry seeing that, some adult addict/scum beating up and old man metal detecting. I've been dogged by a teenager who stayed alittle too close. He came from a group that hides under the boardwalk up to no good. I felt he was waiting for a chance to steal my machine. A full grown man attacking you is a whole nother thing, I will be on the alert even more so now. I'm not that old yet, I like to think I could beat an attacker off. But like Bruce Lee said, the attacker always has that slight advantage because you don't know when where and how. I guess, look mean and grumpy, don't chat with strangers and keep your head on a swivel, oh that's me anyway.

Hi; Like I said in my earlier Post and which AARC alluded to.: YES, I "DO" carry and YES I "WILL" use it. I have no problems doing so. I even think some POS is even near me I have no problem facing them with my hand at the ready. I have had several times when I needed to do it but thank God I have never had to actually pull it. I think for some reason the sight of a gun on a man with his hand on it at the ready strikes some kind of Self Preservation Chord in their puke brains. I know it has worked for me and YES I will do it again. After which when the POS exhibits a form of intelligence by retreating I make sure the local Constabulary are notified IMMEDIATELY. That way the resident POS will not have the opportunity to harass or harm anyone else. I've nailed 4 of the 7 POS who have tested me on this and again YES I "DID" Testify against them. I want to make sure they get a real good close up look at my face so that in my own hopes when they are about to go to sleep they will remember my face in adject horror and have nightmares over it for a very LONG time to come. I want to haunt their every waking minute and while they try to sleep as well so it might give them good reason not to EVER do it again. Anyways, DeepSeeker ADS, I'm glad your doing better guy. When I worked in Detroit I had a CCW permit, and never carried. One of my co-workers was shot dead when he got in his car to go home from work.

And still I didn't carry.

It's just something about me. I'm not afraid as I've had one heck of an adventure in life.

At my age I realize the gravity of taking someone's life. I'm a Christian, and I navigate my world always questioning my choices.

But I will say, they come up this holler, they won't leave.

There you have it. Another member recently scoffed at others not wanting to wear headphones due to the likelihood of being attacked and not being able to hear it coming. This is why some of us don't wear them when out in public.
