One thing to remember about mace or pepper spray. Some of it will come your way. So practice with it first. That way you will know what to expect.

This is why I consider it better to instead carry a mace.

HH and be safe out there!

I was thinking the Gold Plan is a million in coverage and the silver was a 1/2 million and the last plan is 250 thousand. Have a look at what each plan covers.
Yes Indeed! What is the coverage that they will pay out to the Attorney for defending you in a gold plan it is 150K. That is not enough. A defense is easily 300K (at least in California) Do you have the 150 - 200K out of pockets? I think the coverage is weak and outdated. The Million in payout is for settlements if you lose. You can BK on that if you have to (most of the time) But the attorneys will get their pound from you. I am more worried about the attorneys frankly

About 35 yrs ago a guy tried to kick me in the head while I was retreating a target. Luckily I had time to drop over and came back and stuck him with my 8" screwdriver. It hit him in the chest and he went down flopping around like a chicken. Long story short, cops came, emergency medical services, I guess I hit him in the heart. No penetration, just a big bruise on the chest. Some witnesses stepped forward seeing what happened and that saved me from getting a ride downtown. In Toronto in the eighties I used an 8" hunting knife to retreave targets, had a few lurking but nobody came knocking.

Since I'm retired Law Enforcement, I always carry a gun. I'm also covered by LEOSA, so I can carry just about everywhere.

Sounds like the attacker on the beach is a nut job, and needs to go away for a long time, i hope they get him before he kills someone.

Hope the detectorist is ok.

Sorry "Deep" to hear that happened to you. Hope you're ok.

I'll just have to be more aware, i can wear my headsets one ear style. This is one reason i like early Sunday mornings, not to many people around.
My 3 digging tools would also double as excellent defensive weapons....that & alot of prayer!

That area has many high end homes and condos; and easy walking access from the coast highway.
Beachfront high end projects attrack those with MDs; the easy access to the beach attracks the homeless looking for a place to sleep.
When a guy with a MD meets a guy whose "dipstick doesn't touch oil', this can be the result.
Lesson: Be prepared wherever you MD.
Don.......

I been at it for many years, and never like headphones on my ears. AT high tide, I wear them around my neck. Sorry for the man who got beat up. I recommend Mace or Pepper Spray. Good hunting and Good luck.
Sam, please please don't put your faith in pepper spray aka OC spray! If you assailant is on drugs, 99.99% of the time it won't phase them at all! I used to train, and would spray my cheeks right under my eyes, and then finish the rest of the class. The trainees would be flabbergassed. My best advice for OC spray is throw it at the assailant and run like hell!

I'm surprised the detectorist didn't get hassled by the officers. Do you have a digger over 3"? Do you carry your digger in your pouch? Well in California you can be jailed! Possession of an edged weapon over 3" in length. In the pouch = concealed weapon. Use a probe? Can be classed as a dirk or dagger. and in some jurisdictions possession of an edged weapon on a beach. Thank god he didn't get hurt worse or locked up by an overzealous officer. Welcome to California!!!

Seriously Sam DO NOT put your faith in OC spray!

Pennypacker, one more time and your gone again. I let the troll comment slide.

Too bad that guy didn't come to GA and attack me while I was trying out my new LRP. Had he done that it would give me a wonderful chance to review how well the 158gr Hollow Points in my S&W, .38 Air-weight expanded in human flesh. :laughing7: I think they would do quite well.:occasion14:
One should always be aware of their surroundings.

It is also a good idea to take a training course in the use of pepper spray. The most important thing to remember is that the active ingredient is forced out of the canister using a carrier agent that needs to dissipate before the active ingredient works. The best way to accomplish this is by short bursts of spray rather than a long extended trigger squeeze.

Just remember this simple fact about using a gun against an unarmed person. You had better hope there are witnesses to the altercation or you'll be going to jail for a LONG time. Shooting an unarmed person ALWAYS looks bad in a court of law.

What if this elderly person had a gun and this lowlife cracked him in the head and took the gun away from him? That guy wouldn't be injured, he'd be dead. If you're too old or weak to defend yourself bare handed, what makes you think you're going to win in a struggle with someone over your gun?

Assaults happen WAY too fast in real life. Odds are you won't have time to take out your gun and shoot them before they're on you. Sorry, but that's the way it is in the real world. Just the way I see it...

Total BS------If your life is threatened, you have the right to defend yourself. I'm an old guy myself and if some 200 pound young person starts hitting me I will immediately drop to the ground, roll and come up shooting.
Much better to be Judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Real World???? I've been in it along time just by thinking on my feet.

Most gun owners who carry a firearm practice drawing their weapon, I can pull my piece in about 1.5 seconds or less from the time I go for it.

Attack was in La-La land known as California, In the state of Florida your allowed to defend yourself against an attacker, any attacker armed or not if you fear for your life or are threaten with great bodily harm. A senior citizen being attacked is in fact facing great bodily harm and is a victim of a "forcible felony".

So what do you suggest he do, just lay on the ground and have the hell kicked out of him, no thank you. Happens to me I will shoot..... .45 and Hornady 410 Critical Defense rounds do wonders on stopping an attacker.

Marvin we think alike...... I'm too slow to run and too old to fight so I would shoot if attacked...

As I've stated before, if guns are a great way to defend yourself, why are so many police officers shot and killed every year? Because you don't have the time to draw your weapon if someone attacks you out of the blue. You can't go around with your hand on your gun 24/7. And most attacks are from behind. No time to draw your weapon in those situations. You're either knocked out cold or the attacker is choking you out.

Sorry, but carrying a gun on your hip 24/7 isn't going to protect you from anyone. That's just the way it is...

Carrying a gun would not have helped me or prevented anything.

Carrying an awareness of what was around me might have helped.

Don't carry and forget to be completely aware of your surroundings.
