Based on the casting, the hole and the detail, I'm thinking you're on the right track with it being a decorative piece of costume jewelry.
Looks like it may have been gold-plated at some point... maybe decoration from a pocket watch chain or a chatelaine. :icon_scratch:

Yes, your excellent photos show it still has some nice detail. Do you know what type of metal it is (i.e. Is it aluminum or magnetic)? What type of site did you find it at? What was found nearby? These answers might help...

Not sure what metal it is but I think it might be brass. Non-magnetic and it was found at an abandoned town site. Everything from CS buttons, 1800s coins to a 1943 English penny were found at this particular house site.

If it is a jewelry piece, it might help to narrow down what style it is - and thus an approximate age. Can't help w/ that, but surely someone on TNet knows the answer. If not, consider taking it to a mom/pop jewelry store. I find they are usually willing to ID and date things free of charge, even if it isn't jewelry. Good luck!

Did my best with the reverse side, unfortunately the image was not very
good. Think you can get a better image of it?

Not sure if it's due to the upcoming Halloween, but this is the second
image I've looked at tonight that has a creepy face in it. Anybody else see it?
(If not, I'm calling my shrink!)
