GT have you looked up "valve sludger"? It is the lost piece of the first auger attempt by the Truro Co so named in the Mccully letter I keep referring to.

I had not searched that exact phrase. We can add it to the collection of nomenclature for these augers. "valve sludger" seems to have a fuller body of usage than the other variations, with the AI summary even mentioning the chisel that they talk about swapping in when the point wouldn't do. That "valve" mechanism is crucial for the samples they purportedly brought up.

Now this is looking like the original target was a barrel, not a box.

And only one barrel. This is consistent with Auger #2 hitting the solid top, and Auger #5 ?
glancing off the side of the same barrel. Also those digging reports that say they hit it but push it aside or down or something - they keep glancing off the side.

There was an episode of COOI where they were digging and found wood (imagine that), but one of the CREW members (not the cast) pointed out that some of the fragments were a barrel bottom and a piece of side stave. Rick had a deer in the headlights look - clearly not comprehending the significance (or wondering if someone had thrown in something to find - dunno).

If this was legitimate, the barrel is already smashed by their or prior searcher activity.

Wood barrels were a very common item back then. Another meaningless find just as with the wood they continue to find.

Let us consider the fact that there is plenty of fool's gold (iron pyrite) on oak island. If it was packed into this barrel, when driving an auger through it, it would make the metallic sounds described.

Goes without saying that was done before discovering that shiny gold stuff was worthless.

Been focused on the original two targets which started the whole Lagina search - the Chappel vault and the container(s) probed in the MP during Truro activities.

Ignoring the vault for now, the Reader's Digest article said two containers were there, the McCully letter said one container, and I say it was one barrel.

The question is full of what - gold or fool's gold.

How does one know without testing if anything is mixed in?

I have come across someone who processed just one 55 gallon barrel of sands and there was a lot of ounces mixed in fools gold sands.

The stuff I am talking about is mined in big chunks out of solid rock with picks.
I think you are talking about processing soil for the little nuggets - you can make a living, but wow, you have to turn over a LOT of soil.
