hello all,

vp here, haven't had much of a chance to detect for about the last month, the frost and snow have made it real hard to get out but a break in the weather today gave us a nice window to detect so we took it

paco and i first headed to a colonial spot that has paid off well in the past - well to make a long story short, the wind was really strong and just blew right over the open fields - we heard later the wind chill was 8 degrees !!! so anyway we moved to a new spot that was closer to town and had lots of trees - boy did it pay off !

within the first 10 minutes Paco had a mercury dime and a couple wheats - i wasn't getting any good signals - so i moved down to what looked like and old road bed - grassy and overgrown a bit - i started to detect it and got a decent signal that was deep

it was reading an off/on 00 27 on my SE (had my stock coil on) when i took some dirt out it was a solid 00 29 !! so thinking i had silver i dug and dug and dug, by this time paco had wandered over - we both thought - "oh it's huge probably a deep can or something stupid" about 7 inches down i tried my probe again and it finally sounded off - solid high tone - so i dug another 2-3 inches and saw the edge of a silver coin - i showed paco and excitedly said i think i got a silver quarter - "nah it's way too big he yelled, it's a half !!!!"

i threw some dirt back in the hole and covered it up, i said "ok wait" - "i just want to take a moment and think of the possibilities ...." - i had about 1/6th of a silver half dollar showing my FIRST silver half dollar and i wanted to enjoy the moment and remember it - plus i was immediately thinking barber or seated and didn't want to ruin it with a kennedy half (which i still would have have taken !) .... paco tried to dig it out a couple times, but i wouldn't let him - i said just think what it could be - about a full minute went by and i started to dig it all the way out being very careful not to scratch it

when i pulled the half out, Paco screamed BARBER ! and i nearly dropped over ! still can't believe i found it !

thanks for looking !

vp

PS: for those of you interested, the 3D Metal Detecting Game I'm creating is ALMOST done, I will be contacting the people who wanted to test it here in the next few weeks (sorry i deleted the post in the "General Detecting" forum until i got the software copyrighted)

I thought PACO fell off the face of the Earth. :D It is good to know that he is still swinging. :D

Nice Barber half, Kevin! I am glad that you are finding the coins that you want to find!

Keep the fever high, man!

Kyle

One heck of a great find!!!!!!!!! How did that snow miss you guys? We have 12" on the ground, and I am stuck inside. Argh!!! Thanks for showing the half.

Fantastic find... and very enviable. >:( But congratulations, anyway :)

VP,
CONGRATULATIONS BIG GUY!!! What a beautiful old Barber. I'm glad you kept at it and didn't give up. I almost did that last week on my first SLQ. It was DEEP and under some roots.
You have some real willpower waiting and thinking of what is COULD be. Great post.
By the way, your arms look even bigger than before in your avatar. Photoshop or just from digging? ;D ;)
Way to go!!!

Great find there.....Now only if I could find something like that.

Beautiful half Kevin. I'm still looking for my first silver half :-\ Looks like its in great condition too. Eight degree wind chill is just a little too frigid for me but spring is right around the corner. Another year of laboring for coppers awaits. Congrats to you sir on your first barber half!! :o ;D

I swear I would of felt the same way. Fantastic congrats.
