hello all,

vp here, haven't had much of a chance to detect for about the last month, the frost and snow have made it real hard to get out but a break in the weather today gave us a nice window to detect so we took it

paco and i first headed to a colonial spot that has paid off well in the past - well to make a long story short, the wind was really strong and just blew right over the open fields - we heard later the wind chill was 8 degrees !!! so anyway we moved to a new spot that was closer to town and had lots of trees - boy did it pay off !

within the first 10 minutes Paco had a mercury dime and a couple wheats - i wasn't getting any good signals - so i moved down to what looked like and old road bed - grassy and overgrown a bit - i started to detect it and got a decent signal that was deep

it was reading an off/on 00 27 on my SE (had my stock coil on) when i took some dirt out it was a solid 00 29 !! so thinking i had silver i dug and dug and dug, by this time paco had wandered over - we both thought - "oh it's huge probably a deep can or something stupid" about 7 inches down i tried my probe again and it finally sounded off - solid high tone - so i dug another 2-3 inches and saw the edge of a silver coin - i showed paco and excitedly said i think i got a silver quarter - "nah it's way too big he yelled, it's a half !!!!"

i threw some dirt back in the hole and covered it up, i said "ok wait" - "i just want to take a moment and think of the possibilities ...." - i had about 1/6th of a silver half dollar showing my FIRST silver half dollar and i wanted to enjoy the moment and remember it - plus i was immediately thinking barber or seated and didn't want to ruin it with a kennedy half (which i still would have have taken !) .... paco tried to dig it out a couple times, but i wouldn't let him - i said just think what it could be - about a full minute went by and i started to dig it all the way out being very careful not to scratch it

when i pulled the half out, Paco screamed BARBER ! and i nearly dropped over ! still can't believe i found it !

thanks for looking !

vp

PS: for those of you interested, the 3D Metal Detecting Game I'm creating is ALMOST done, I will be contacting the people who wanted to test it here in the next few weeks (sorry i deleted the post in the "General Detecting" forum until i got the software copyrighted)

Two word's......Too Sweet!!Nice snag Vpone....I'm not sure who was happier?Congrat's on a beautiful find!

WOW!!!! A great day for you! You must be so stoked! And what a beauty it is!

I am so glad you took the time to soak it all in and not hurry. It reminds me of a Barber half I found years ago at beach in Maine.
The beach sand was frozen solid and I had a masons hammer to dig(chop) with. I got a nice big signal and took a hard chop at the sand. A cone shaped plug of ice and sand flipped up, landing upside down next to the hole. I looked at the plug and saw the perfect imprint of a Barber half. I looked in the hole and there it was, still frozen in place, face up. I didn't hurry at that point, I just admired it for a bit. I then got up and took the plug over and showed it to my buddy. He looked at it and said........"That's a Barber half !" I laughed and said........"No, it's still in the hole, I wanted to show you first what it looked like". He came over and got a look at it and then I took my knife and chipped it out. That is a good detecting memory for me. Your find made me think about it again.

Thank you! Congrats on your super find!

Good luck!...............HH

hey Dan - how's it going out there in SUNNY CA (grumble, grumble) :) i remember seeing your end of year post and you had a Barber Half and i said - "wow if i could EVER find one of those ...." now i know what it feels like - can't stop looking at the thing - it's just a HUGE hunk of silver - i can still remember what it looked like in the hole - don't think i'll ever forget that image - glad i took the time to really enjoy it - during that minute when it was still in the hole - i looked around and said to Paco "let's leave it over night, i know where it's at we'll come back monday and dig it up" just trying to build the excitement a bit - I was kidding of course but had paco goign bigtime !

take care

Kevin

Nice Half Kev
Hit that area hard. That video game sounds interesting since I,m a huge gamer. I always said that although the concept of a metal detecting video game won't have mass appeal it would definitely interest me.

great story - that's exactly the way i was - just wanted to leave it in there a few more seconds, admire it, and definately remember it - there way too many times when i pulled a coin quickly out of the hole and then later tried to think back to what exactly happened

take care

OMG how sweet is that!!! It's almost perfect. You did it right, savor the moment, enjoy, and remember. WOW awsome dig VP. Congrats. I still have broken the 1900 mark yet, but, soon. My oldest is a 1909 wheat (no mint). WTG, I'm not sure at all of how I would have reacted. I do feel the excitement for you. Thanks for sharing.

hey gary,

that's it exactly, when i started digging this coin would have been one of my last thoughts - then when i saw the edge laying in the bottom of a 9 inch hole i got EXCITED - that's why i covered it back up with dirt - just to savor the feeling for a bit, the coin wasn't going anywhere and neither was i - Paco thought i was nuts

take care

kevin

nice digs there.

Well done Kevin!!

Still looking for my first silver half of any kind down here in Sunbury.

Hal
