Metal Detecting
hello all,

vp here, haven't had much of a chance to detect for about the last month, the frost and snow have made it real hard to get out but a break in the weather today gave us a nice window to detect so we took it

paco and i first headed to a colonial spot that has paid off well in the past - well to make a long story short, the wind was really strong and just blew right over the open fields - we heard later the wind chill was 8 degrees !!! so anyway we moved to a new spot that was closer to town and had lots of trees - boy did it pay off !

within the first 10 minutes Paco had a mercury dime and a couple wheats - i wasn't getting any good signals - so i moved down to what looked like and old road bed - grassy and overgrown a bit - i started to detect it and got a decent signal that was deep

it was reading an off/on 00 27 on my SE (had my stock coil on) when i took some dirt out it was a solid 00 29 !! so thinking i had silver i dug and dug and dug, by this time paco had wandered over - we both thought - "oh it's huge probably a deep can or something stupid" about 7 inches down i tried my probe again and it finally sounded off - solid high tone - so i dug another 2-3 inches and saw the edge of a silver coin - i showed paco and excitedly said i think i got a silver quarter - "nah it's way too big he yelled, it's a half !!!!"

i threw some dirt back in the hole and covered it up, i said "ok wait" - "i just want to take a moment and think of the possibilities ...." - i had about 1/6th of a silver half dollar showing my FIRST silver half dollar and i wanted to enjoy the moment and remember it - plus i was immediately thinking barber or seated and didn't want to ruin it with a kennedy half (which i still would have have taken !) .... paco tried to dig it out a couple times, but i wouldn't let him - i said just think what it could be - about a full minute went by and i started to dig it all the way out being very careful not to scratch it

when i pulled the half out, Paco screamed BARBER ! and i nearly dropped over ! still can't believe i found it !

thanks for looking !

vp

PS: for those of you interested, the 3D Metal Detecting Game I'm creating is ALMOST done, I will be contacting the people who wanted to test it here in the next few weeks (sorry i deleted the post in the "General Detecting" forum until i got the software copyrighted)

NICE find Hoss!! I have been hunting 30 years and never found a Barber half. I bet that made even those big pipes of YOURS quiver when you saw that big silver rim in the hole. GREAT post and story. My lady was with me when I found both my half dimes last year...but when I found my Walking Liberty Half...I was by myself. I bout' crapped my drawers :laughing7:

NICE FIND man!! I want to hear more about this metal detecting game your coming out with...I thought of doing something like that before too...what kind of system do you play it on?

Nice dig! I thought Paco was going solo for this year, but it looks like you two are making a good team. :)

The area where Paco found his Kennedy is still producing! Good job!

hey kirk,

yeah paco and i have been collaborating a bit, he's been a great help with developing the detecting game too
i actually found the barber half at a new colonial site (definately surprised me it was there), the funny thing is it's one of those "right in front of your face places" - i pass it everyday but never gave it a second thought - paco got permission

take care

Awesome, Kevin, we are in the process of getting permission for some coppa-era sites. We haven't hit a research site this year yet, so we are looking forward to it. Kyle has been hitting the research books and it looks like we are going to strike it on some of the sites.

I hope you and Rob find some nice coins this year!

ConGrats VP !!!!!!!!!

Beautiful coin ! :headbang:
I enjoyed how you paused to "savor" the moment of what is it gonna be ? ? ! !

Done that myself many many times....Enjoy the predig ! To bad we cant bottle it and sell it on T-Net :laughing7:

HH !

Derek :tongue1:

Wow! That half is in great shape!
There's no feeling to describe what it's like to see one of those in the bottom of a hole.

To me it sounds like your asking the 'wrong profession for a girls drink' :icon_jokercolor:

Nice find :)

Killer half vp! Fantastic shape. I'm sure that had your heart pumping. WTG. Good luck on your next hunt.
Take care, Mike

That is a right righeous coin thar, bud!

In all the years I have been at this hobby, I have found but one, in the front yard driveway of an old 1890's house. A 1906 and a beaut--just like yours.

Congratulations on the most special find!
