Hi, I need the ID of this item. It was found in a creek near some 1700's houses. It appears to be copper and was once plated with brass or gold. It is also hollow and there are no makers marks on it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Mtt, it is hard to tell without seeing both ends, but is the small end is solid and the large end is open then it may be an early pen which used the metal tips.

Matt, which end has the "hard rock like stuff"? Is the narrow end closed? Thanks for giving the size, as it would not be a pen.

Do the ends look like they could be attached to other pieces? could it possibly be for a bag pipe? I have a starter pipe, & it has a piece that looks similar in size & shape, tho mine is not old at all.

Well, it looks like the thing was a sheet of copper that was bent into the shape and then the oval thing at the end was a seperate piece and the smaller edge has the copper kind of rolled up.

last questions Matt; does the "rock stuff" end stick to a magnet? Is the large end opened or closed?

this one is going to be a hard nut to crack.
its still in good shape so you should not have much of a problem finding out what it is.

It reminds me of a marlinspike or fid,
examples here; http://www.frayedknotarts.com/individual/welchtool.html

That probably doesn't make sense though if it is hollow :icon_scratch:

could it been copper wrapped wood?
