UPDATE 1799 Cent 1917Walker,KGII,IHs, 38&44LCs,642cnt 1804 1/2cnt!

Well after hitting that 1838 LC two days ago, I went back yesterday....at 3" ..bam....out pops a copper, I could make out what type it was, but could not see the year until today when I carefull began to clean it up. I have not done the reverse yet, that is going to take some time. 1799 Draped Bust Cent...not sure of the variety yet, hopefully this pic gives a better ID.

Today I went back, nothing but a zincoln for over an hour. Managed to yank a silver topless thimble which kind of got me going. Then I notice something a little distance away, a bottle hunters worst nightmare! 98% of everything broken! I put down the detector for a bit and started rummaging through the broken glass. I managed to save a few, some very interesting ones I kept anyway that were broken but had nice embossments on them...like the pin worm syrup. Most are small medicine bottles, all the big cool ones were done. I saw dates on a few the were 1840's, 1860's and the one that really got me down deep was a George Washington flask shattered, but two big pieces remained that I took a pic of with my cell phone...(will post pics sometime tomorrow).

I was about to call it quits but went back to the detector for just a little more, I picked a random spot and within a couple of swings out pops a ring from 2", Looked like a class ring, but not school info on it, the stone is also missing, looks antique. In that same swing, I had a quarter reading at 0", figuring it was a clad quarter, I stuck my digger under it and popped it out....Pow! 1917 Walking Liberty Half ( will post pic of the hole tomorrow as well) Kept going for a little while longer to pull out that Eagle Button with a Ridabock & Co. NY backmark (it has 19 stars around it, 2 piece and quite fat - any Albert's Book owner's help me ID please!)

Finally I get a good high reading at 6"....i dig.....i dig some more......signal still there, hmm it's deep, signal still good, not iron.....i dig some more...thoughts of a mason jar filled with coins races through my head, i dig....still not there yet..I'm well over a foot down..i dig more...pinpointer now telling me i'm close...i dig more...im there...............is it the mason jar? is it filled with coins?!!

No its a friggin brand new Sprite Soda Can......I can't figure that one out :icon_scratch:...Walker at 0" just a few feet away, now a brand new soda can over a foot down....dissapointing...especially spending so much time digging that one carefully...

I wish it was just this stuff I dug, but the trash to treasure ratio here is 200:1, so much crap...

Hopefully I get back tomorrow..this spot will be extinct really soon.

For Rarity, quality of the coin, that is a BANNER find. Forget Redbook prices when figuring out value, none of those prices work for ground found coppers, they always knock off for the environmental damage. With that said, there have been plenty of 1799 Enviornmental Damaged coppers sold on the auction sites and by joining for free the Heritage Auction site you can see the live auction and the archives. The archives are a good indicator of how ground found coppers, similar to yours have done recently. I might add, quite well, so it is a money coin!
This find is right behind finding a Chain Cent and value sometimes not that far behind, again, this is a super find.

Without seeing the reverse, I still think it is the Sheldon 189 variety, "Normal Date" type.

Even though I am positive you found the coin in a situation that would make it most improbable, I must mention that on one website I found said the 1799 was the most counterfeited of all U.S. coins, which I found surprising.

Again, congrats on a RARE find.

Don
I would like to add to Don's post an say that Heritage will do free appraisals if you sign up for their site... I also would like to ask Don or anyone else who may know he answer..since they claim the 1799 was the most counterfeited of all U.S. coins.. Would this coin still be worth thousands?? or be worthless if found to be counterfeit?

I would like to clear up something... when I said they I didn't mean Hertitage auction..I meant who ever said the 1799 was the most counterfeited of all U.S. coins.. ok Hope this misunderstanding is cleared up..thanks

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Those are some nice finds.

The bottles are just as good also. Lot of old sites still have bottle pits. I need to go and dig some of them out at some colonial sites.

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

More information on the reason for rarity, Info below is from this website:

http://www.coinlink.com/CoinGuide/featured/1799-large-cent-the-abbey-cent/

The rarity of the 1799 large cents is obviously due to a low production of coins bearing this date. Mint records provide no help in determining the mintage of cents dated 1799. The original records show that 904,585 cents were actually struck in 1799, but it is now recognized that nearly all of those coins were dated 1798. Current rarity estimates suggest that fewer than 1,000 cents exist with the 1799 date, including all three varieties, although only a small percentage grade better than Good. This survival suggests that the original mintage was probably in the ballpark of 30,000 to 35,000 coins, assuming a 3% survival rate.
Authentication has always been a problem for this date. Many pieces exist with the date altered, usually from 1798. In most cases, careful study of the variety guides will reveal not only the date of the altered coin, but also the variety. Many electrotypes and other cast copies also exist, some crudely made and others extremely deceptive. The introduction of third party grading services two decades ago has eliminated most of the counterfeits from numismatic circulation.

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Another great large copper find. :o This fall is gonna be huge for copper enthusiasts...I can feel it now. If this find makes the banner, which I feel it should (I nominated it), it will make three coppers on the banner at the same time. For those of you that aren't aware of the ratio of banner posts to large coppers it goes as follows. 151 banner posts (not including this one if it makes it) only 8 of those posts were solely based on large copper recoveries. (with one or two more that included large coppers and a few other finds) Let's keep the coppers coming folks. Major congrats to woj on finding a rare large cent.

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Well, whether it makes banner or not,(it is a banner find in my book :) ) this coin is almost equal to a Chain cent in demand by collectors, it is one of the rare coppers that even environmentally damaged still commands a great price. Even if not selling the coin, you have one of the hardest to get Large Cents and whatever you do, make sure it gets preserved to prevent further damage from the corrosive elements.

Here is a ground found 1799 that sold at auction, not recently, but look at the price, it has more detail but it is corroded, especially the Reverse..........

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

This is most Certainly a BANNER Copper!

And I have nominated it as well.

To find this baby Anyday is a GREAT find--but I just had to say that I like the CW-Era General Staff button as well.  Aluminum Jelly will reveal the gold gilding on that bad boy.  The old ring is certainly cool too.

Well done!

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

Great finds! Would you be able to post a closeup of the thimble? I found a topless one as well and they're nice finds...now if only I could find a 1799 too!

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

I just returned hoping for one more great find since I haven't walked away empty handed from there yet...a NJ copper was in my head....and it looks like that is where it will stay for now :-\. I didn't hunt for long, I pulled a couple buttons, one Lincoln, and lots of junk. I will get better pics of some of these buttons and some of yesterdays cell phone pics up if I can get my stupid media card reader to work.

Should I send this thing out to NGC or ANACS? Will they clean it up? I'm not seeing a cleaning option on their websites.

ANACS will NOT clean it up, but it probably is the least expensive. If you don't get that crust off the coin before sending it in to ANACS, you will get a lower and undesired grade. NCS will clean and conserve, then NGC will grade and encapsulate it, but it will cost you. Click on this http://www.ncscoin.com and read on.....................Rich

NGC does not clean, NCS does, go to their website, but also read my post about possible costs on the coin that I made on the chain cent posts. If you are not going to sell, it might cost you more than you might like to spend, so read carefully, and maybe even email them. But it is NCS that does conservation of coins, not NGC, they grade the coins.

Re: 1799 Draped Bust Cent! 1917 Walker, bottles and buttons

That is a spectacular find. I've found about 12 or 13 draped bust half cents and large cents in a year and a half but none as valuable as yours.Congratulations.Here is the half cent I found a few weeks ago.Chris
