UPDATE 1799 Cent 1917Walker,KGII,IHs, 38&44LCs,642cnt 1804 1/2cnt!

Well after hitting that 1838 LC two days ago, I went back yesterday....at 3" ..bam....out pops a copper, I could make out what type it was, but could not see the year until today when I carefull began to clean it up. I have not done the reverse yet, that is going to take some time. 1799 Draped Bust Cent...not sure of the variety yet, hopefully this pic gives a better ID.

Today I went back, nothing but a zincoln for over an hour. Managed to yank a silver topless thimble which kind of got me going. Then I notice something a little distance away, a bottle hunters worst nightmare! 98% of everything broken! I put down the detector for a bit and started rummaging through the broken glass. I managed to save a few, some very interesting ones I kept anyway that were broken but had nice embossments on them...like the pin worm syrup. Most are small medicine bottles, all the big cool ones were done. I saw dates on a few the were 1840's, 1860's and the one that really got me down deep was a George Washington flask shattered, but two big pieces remained that I took a pic of with my cell phone...(will post pics sometime tomorrow).

I was about to call it quits but went back to the detector for just a little more, I picked a random spot and within a couple of swings out pops a ring from 2", Looked like a class ring, but not school info on it, the stone is also missing, looks antique. In that same swing, I had a quarter reading at 0", figuring it was a clad quarter, I stuck my digger under it and popped it out....Pow! 1917 Walking Liberty Half ( will post pic of the hole tomorrow as well) Kept going for a little while longer to pull out that Eagle Button with a Ridabock & Co. NY backmark (it has 19 stars around it, 2 piece and quite fat - any Albert's Book owner's help me ID please!)

Finally I get a good high reading at 6"....i dig.....i dig some more......signal still there, hmm it's deep, signal still good, not iron.....i dig some more...thoughts of a mason jar filled with coins races through my head, i dig....still not there yet..I'm well over a foot down..i dig more...pinpointer now telling me i'm close...i dig more...im there...............is it the mason jar? is it filled with coins?!!

No its a friggin brand new Sprite Soda Can......I can't figure that one out :icon_scratch:...Walker at 0" just a few feet away, now a brand new soda can over a foot down....dissapointing...especially spending so much time digging that one carefully...

I wish it was just this stuff I dug, but the trash to treasure ratio here is 200:1, so much crap...

Hopefully I get back tomorrow..this spot will be extinct really soon.

Woj,as long as your digging or even just eyeballing these old coins just keep the pictures coming!!! As far as the 1799 goes,I think it should hit the banner shortly. You could be looking at a 5-8,000 dollar coin, I believe if it was me, and I consider myself pretty fair at cleaning coins,I would trust the cleaning, grading and encapsulating to a professional coin service. JMHO
Great site you've got there. Savor it and work it slooooooowwwwwww

If you switched the pictures from photobucket then this coin should make the banner. It's not every day that you see copper coins worth many thousands of dollars coming out of the ground. Its nice to add these pictures to your original post but you might get a few more views of your finds if you start a new thread. Some people who have already looked at this might breeze over it not knowing you've made more recent recoveries there. Just my opinion though. Now that I know you're doing it this way I'll keep checking it out. Keep hitting that site. It sounds amazing.

Dang!!!!!!!!!!!!
We all wish to come across a site like that.

Speechless about what to say, I think everyone else has said what I am thinking.

Keep building on the thread, maybe you will make it in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest Metal Detecting Thread.

I am miffed at times on what does and does not make banner, but in my mind Woj's 1799 in that condition is RARE, that is one of my goal coins for years, of course along with a Chain Cent and I have seen less 1799's found by detectorists than 1793 chain cents and the Chains are usually quite worn down to almost nothing. To me it is without a doubt a BANNER of a find, regardless of making it on the forum's banner or not.

The blue crystals on the Half Cent are a bummer, even NCS will say that sometimes it is best to leave them alone as that removing them can most likely leave a pock mark on the coin where the corrosion began. I usually leave them alone and make sure the coin gets a good long soak in warm distilled water, perhaps a day and then thoroughly dry under a lamp and see how it looks after drying, if it looks a bit hazy, then Blue Ribbon Coin Conditioner might be best to use to stabilize the coin for storage, but he utmost importance should be the good distilled water soak and thorough drying.

Thank you all for the replies. 8)

I spent a couple hours last night and one this morning cleaning up the 1804 half cent (now visible as a plain 4 stemlesswreath variety). The green crystals are tough...don't know what I am going to do to ge them off :icon_scratch:

The 1864 2-cent (large motto) cleaned up really nice....peroxide treatment worked really well, just look at the pre cleaning post a few pics above!

And there you go, thank you again Don! I am going out right now to get some distilled water right now.
