( UPDATE )!!! Antietam Breast Plate! (My 1st)! New Pics After Preservation.

Ok folks, here it goes. Got out with Civilman1 today. We started in a freshly disced field.Couple hrs of nothing. We decided to retreat to the woods for some shade and hunt. The spiderwebs were treacherous,Joe said he had enough to weave a blanket. we made it to the truck and were going down the fire lane and spotted an area that was not so overgrown and stopped.Again like always we were relentles in our search. 5 mins outta the truck I dug a three ringer. The got a good reading of 78 VDI it was a mason jar lid with porcelin insert.I thought to myself oh well it couldve been a plate.Another signal and the same result.I went back where i dug the three ringer and bou 5-7 yds away got another good 78 VDI. I dug and flipped the plug and thought hmm this jar lid doesnt have the threads? I picked it up and it was heavy. I turned it over and that beautiful eagle was staring at me! Holy Smokes I hollared Joe? I just dug a breast plate!!!, and sped over to show him. Its a very nice full plate without the hooks. Funny thing is the adrenaline rush was as extreme as "Buck Fever" lol. I have only cleaned with water and a soft toothbrush so far. Any suggestions are welcomed. Prolly cant see in the pics but appears to be soldiers initials scratched on the back.

Thanx for lookin, getty

OK! I sent this plate out to have it Professionally preserved by a man named Robert McDaniel. He is a very experienced relic restoration pro. He did an excellent job! just look at the difference. He did a superb job and Im very happy with the results. This relic will display VERY well.

Re: Antietam Breast Plate! (My 1st)!

Very Very cool find :headbang: Have your hands stopped shaking yet? Congrats on your first. A Two plate weekend. :)

Re: Antietam Breast Plate! (My 1st)!

That breast plate is awesome and looks like it will clean up nicely! Might be worth considering a professional conservation. I have an eagle breast plate, not a find, won it in a contest. Not in the best condition but I have one and consider it a treasure. A hunt with Civilman must have been great as well, he is hardcore outdoors! HH and Congrats, Mike

Re: Antietam Breast Plate! (My 1st)!

Joe said you dug as good 'un Roger and he was right. Congrats on your first and not last BP I'm sure from that heavily occupied CW area. I would leave it as is. I dug one while Dman and I hunted a CSA Cav. camp a few years ago and decided to use the old relic hunters trick from the past and rubbed Vaseline on it to bring out the detail in the eagle. Later, I decided to send it to relic restoration expert (Robert McDaniel in AL) to repair some ground action around the perimeter. He had to clean and clean and clean it to get the Vaseline off so the epoxy repair would take and not separate later.
In fact, I just wrote an article for W & E Treasures at their request on the top 3 Relic Repair Masters that will be published later this year. I learned a lot from those gentlemen and they gave me some great tips on what to do that I put in the article. HH, Quindy.
