a few weeks ago i was walkin around in the boonies looking for bottles. i came across 2 small piles of stones. i thought to myself that someone marked something for some reason but didnt give it any thought. and a while later a came across some more little piles of rock. now im thinking WTF?? i so i started to look around me and from where i was standing i see another pile. i walk tothat one and spot another. well this goes on for about 3/4 of a mile. then i see it a pile of rocks about 2 feet tall. i get ready to start digging with my trusty leshce shovel and i look at the time, i gotta haul butt back to my car n get home to get ready for work. now im thinking should i find the spot again and dig? im kinda worried a might unbury someones pet. but why would they go to such extreme to take it so far in the boonies??? the closest house is about 2 miles from the spot. ill take my md if i go back, but then again im thinking what if some sicko booby trapped it???honestly, should i go back??? i may go tomorrow, but i dunno. i have been thinking of it every day....what could be under there, obliously its something..... even if my md does not go off, could there be cash??? what would u all do??? what ever it is i give my word ill follow up in this post, or delete my account and enjoy my riches some where;)

Could it be an indian burial ground? How are the piles shaped, roundish or long? I occasionally find piles of rocks in the woods here in Germany, have taken a few apart only to find more rocks. Many farmers dump their field rocks and they have been doing it for 1000 years around here. Good luck and I look forward to your post after you hunt it. HH, Mike

The first thing that came to mind was some sort of horny cult thing. Then I thought about the booby trap and then a dope drop-off site.

I know one thing, I'd be back out there. I'd metal detect before digging. If I got a loud metal signal I'd probably look for some way to unearth whatever from a distance.

Oh too, if you park at the site and see a big black car with heavily tinted glass, get your butt out of there as fast as possible ;D

My first thoughts on reading this:

1. No grass growing in the rockpiles - I would tend to think it's not that old unless the area is all rocks and no grass or weeks anyways.

2. Piles within clear sight of one another - either someone just wasn't clever at hiding whatever he's hiding, or wants to make it very clear for "someone" to follow.

It could certainly be a GeoCache type thing - maybe the first small pile was a coordinate site with a note that told to follow the rock piles to the big one etc...

Personally I think I'd be more worried that it's drug related in some way as badger mentioned. Take the detector, keep an eye out for anyone else out there and just be careful.

Its treasure i tell you!!! TREASURE!!! Just think, it could be a chest full of 20 dollar gold pieces from the 1800s, or maybe silver, yeah thats what it probably is, silver! a giant jar filled with thousands of silver coins of mixed dates and mint marks!!! If you dont dig it, you wont sleep for months!

Why does everything have to be so complicated. Someone piled up some rocks. Move them and dig under them if that is waht you want to do.

To me it sounds like the markers that they use in my daughters Jr ROTC map reading class.

If I was hiding something of value, I would not put it where it was east to find, and where there is public access. Not trying to rain on your parade .. just my thoughts.

Sounds like a Blair Witch movie....Kinda of creepy... Once I ran across something similar while scouting for deer. Rock piles that were carefully place but they were in one area in the pines. I asked around and found out it was a childs cat that was from summer camp near the lake.

Old Tom,

Its also an old Boy Scouting method of marking trails in the wilderness or heavily wooded areas.

When the dust has settled, and the tin foil hats have been put away, nothing of significance will be found.

Grown men living out a wet dream.

Sorry, but that's not only offensive, but a pretty narrow and closed minded response. The fact is you have no idea if anything of significance will be found or not - of course the odds are strongly in favor of nothing being there, but from your response I can guarantee one thing - the 1 time in 1000 where there IS something of significance there, the person with your attitude will walk away empty handed while many of the rest of us will not.

I rarely respond to these kinds of posts, but it boggles my mind why someone with such a lack of imagination, creativity and optimism would even bother reading or posting on forums like this.

If you are on privately owned property I would not be supprised at all if they were nothing more than property makers. Property and surveyers alike make the bounderies of properties with various markers like pink flags tied to trees, metal stakes, and sometime rock piles. I recently bought property and walked the property and maked the bounderies with pink flags just so I could get a feel for the property. However, I am sure everyone has heard of the term property stakes which are metal stakes driven into the ground to make borders but they sometimes get lost. To me this just looks like a more permant way of marking the property border and the tall pile you found is just marking a corn of the property so the owner knows where he is when walking or ATVing the border.

Re: i found small piles of rocks that lead to a large one, should i.........

I found a spot deep in the woods of West Virginia once that had about 15 piles of rocks all down a hillside. I metal detected around them for hours with no results. What we finally decided was that these were likely graves. All I can say is be careful, man. If you want to move the piles of rocks (I'd be more concerned about snakes and yellow jackets than booby traps personally), make sure you don't dig too deep. If they are graves, the rocks may be there for a reason (i.e., the graves are shallow). This especially true if it is really rocky soil in your neck of the woods. Early settlers in those circumstances would rather dig a shallow grave and stack up rocks than try to dig 5 or 6 feet down. I would definately metal detect around them--they are a sign of prior human occupation and they deserve investigation. Also be on the lookout for flat places were a homestead could have stood or old flowers (in the spring season) like daffodils or lilacs. And for God's sake, if you do stumble upon something gruesome, at least cover it back up with stones. Don't allow the animals to carry someone's remains away. Keep us all posted on this one. Start with a thorough detecting of the area. If you don't find anything there, you may not want to go to the great length of moving those stones.
