i took the 1892 barber half i found yesterday in a brinks box to a coin delaer today. his first words were "where did you get it?" when i told him out of a brinks box he shook his head in amazement. i told him i wanted his opinion on what the coin would grade and that i already had a grade in mind. i told him i wanted his honest opinion and not to worry about offending me. he put on his loop and looked at it for about 2 minutes and then offered to buy it from me. i told him i was not interested in selling it i just wanted to know what he thought the grade was. he said he thought that it would grade between MS65-MS67. that was a big surprise because i had guessed about AU50. he also liked the light toning around the top left side of the obverse.
he then offered to send it out monday to ANACS with some of the coins he was having graded if i would pay the grading fee. i agreed and he is going to ship out to them monday. he said i could expect it back around the first week in Jan. 2010 and that they had a 15 day turn around time not counting weekends and holidays., can't wait to see what it grades....

Wow, silvercop, that find is truely amazing. Think this came out of someones collection? Hard to believe that someone would dump this thing into loose coins.

Had to. I gurantee someone popped this out of a 2X2 and cashed it in.

oh yea AG it had to. i was wondering if a kid got into a collection or if it had been stolen or if someone may have died and his/her relative may have cashed it in? who knows? i am blown away by it. the pictures i posted don't do it justice.

That is great - to estimate such a high MS state is so lucky going through a coin roller. How someone could toss that thing out for 50 cents....

A slab for sure. I would dare to say it was hot. Doesnt take away from an exceptional find.

Having it graded should give you some good pics. Please post those. These kind of finds are what drive me on! :)

bad thing is waiting until jan to get it back. oh well guess that is the norm.

What did the dealer offer to pay for it? Looking it up appears to be a $500+ coin.

Nicely done sir. Staying with it after those skunks has paid off big time! Congrats again its a beautiful coin.

Was this a respectable coin dealer that you brought it to? Judging just from the blurry picture of the Barber, I can tell you that it has probably been cleaned. Either that or it's a proof, but considering you pulled it from a bank roll, I'd say cleaned. There's no way I could venture a grade from the picture though, obviously, but I wouldn't have slabbed it, probably. What did the dealer charge you to have it graded?

First...I can't see it rate as high as MS-65 because the coin went through a coin machine at least once (one at the bank, and one at brinks). Coin to coin contact will leave marks on the high points which would definitely bump it down.

Second, you probably just earned yourself a few more competitors, because don't think the guy at the coin shop won't be telling people about the incredible find you had......

I'll take my cleaned comment back. I missed the better pictures of the Barber farther down. I can see there really is a ton of detail on the reverse, and it looks pretty good, actually. You might just have gotten EXTREMELY lucky! :icon_thumright:

Let us know what ANACS says!

yea paul i am sorry but that was the best i could do with my old camera. the coin dealer i took it to is very reputable and knowledgeable. if he wasn't i would have never left the coin with him. he is going to ship it to ANACS monday with some of his coins. he said the grading fee was 30.00 and he said if i would give him 5.00 to help with shipping and insurance he would send it off for me. he said he was of interested to see how close he came to the grade. so i gave him the 35.00, i mean heck all i have in it now is 35.50 and have a chance to get a high grade coin. the dealer said he did see some bag and contact marks but the high relief areas looked very good to him with very little signs of wear.

as far as competition goes he knows all about roll hunting. he buys silver from one of my many competitiors that i know of. don't pay much though. he pays 4X's face on the 40% and 6X on the 90% if i remember right. sometimes i don't know who pays less dealers or pawn shops? i have never sold any silver (yet).

Really, you've not sold any yet?

I'm unemployed so have too sell some, only %40's though and still have over 100 rolls of 'em. Have been overall rather fortunate in finding as many as do; $20 Silver would really make selling them so nice.

have not sold any. i am holding out for 22.00 oz.

Well, maybe you can buy a new camera if you get a good grade! An MS65 1892 Barber is worth about $2500-$3000. Here's an example of one that sold 3 days ago on Heritage.

Of course, that one was graded by PCGS, which is more reputable than ANACS, and commands higher premiums.
