Aren't those big trees Live Oaks? They don't grow around here. We have Post Oak, Pin Oak and White Oak mainly in my neck of the woods. Hill country is supposed to be the best deer hunting in the country. Did you folks see any deer there? Maybe all you guys are wrong and chicken tastes like snake? I imagine there were more snakes than chickens way back when! That is what we always called an old Coon Tail Diamond Back. You can tell them from other rattlers by the coon stripes just in front of the rattles. It's the second largest poison snake in the USA. The Eastern Diamondback gets bigger, but that old boy you found was plenty big enough! Loved all the pictures. Glad everyone had a good time. Monty

You're right Monty, HUGE live oaks....well over 200 years old...and we saw tons of deer every nite, and morning....Don't think I'd want to run into a bigger snake....this one was plenty!

Monty they are Live Oaks.Deer aplenty and also many 'Axis ?deer' which have taller antlers than the 'White Tail'.There are so many that they are trying to overtake the White tails and therefore there is an open season year around on them. They say the meat is closer to beef than to venison.

River Rat,

How did the hunt at the 5 Oaks Ranch go? Anything cool found.

Yep, there were many cool things found. It was funny to watch all those guys who had antz in their pants to detect as soon as they arrived on the 5 Oaks property. Ron, a walking/talking encyclopedia led us on a 1-1 1/2 hr tour, with the guys hauling their shovels, detectors around with them anxiously waiting for the hunt to begin. Needless to say there was load of history at that place.

If you look at the monster oak, that's where I found many Indian artifacts and at another big tree closer to the river.

Ron mentioned that the Mexicans wanted the Nueces River as the boundary between the US & Mexico, they asked for but got the Rio Grande instead.

Mr Snake was an unhappy camper, not just because I pulled him out from under the AC unit, but because I took his pic a couple different times from 3 feet away with my cell phone camera................

If it was an enormous pile of rocks and boulders in the middle of a huge, flat area and really hard to get to because of the underbrush, then probably.

On the right going toward the cabins. very thick toward the bottom, I posted a Fb video from it, left a quarter up there did you find it?
