And I want to thank all who attended. What a great and forgiving group! As I had never seen the sites,on friday Ed and I met Manza at his shop and then the two of us went out to his acreage. What a disaster! It was totally unhuntable!30 acres out the window, what was I going to do now?I was really worried, then I met a great lady at Neal's named Ann and talking to her I discovered she had 22 acres on the Dry Frio(it had water in it).A little coaxing and sweet talk and we were in for the saturday hunt!Saved!
Again, the Rowdy Bunch,Six Pack and all the newbies were great to meet and visit with and hope we can do it again sometime. Thanks to all for being a great bunch,it means a lot to me that you had a good time. Ron

Once you make a hunt with the Rowdy Bunch/LaLa's,you are no longer a 'newbie'.You have graduated! That is ,if you have read all the CTH hunt threads, the LBH hunt threads.

And be there to meet the rest of us in Caldwell Oct of next year ! Miss you Daddy ! :-*

WSD, thanks for putting on another terrific hunt. The six pack grew and by next year we'll be a whole case! You pulled it off with your winning smile and ways, charming those ladies to death and in turn had 3 more hunts in places we didn't even know about until we got there. I doubt if many people could pull off what you did in a matter of hours. My hat's off to ya Ron!!! You are still "The Man" !!!!!

Ok now, let's get those others in here to post their finds - OldRiver? Roy2Bears,finish your breakfast and post!Tee?And Baggins, what's the date on that old Mex coin?
RR,don't just post your finds, but also tell the whole history of 5 Oaks/cabin.

Whatever happened to the bowl of crab/shrimp salad I made up?I heard one time that the last it was seen,BEF was sitting in the closet lickin' the bowl?Stagecoach couldn't believe there was a whole loaf of bread in it.That's an old 1920's receipe.

Burdie - I think you will have some new recruits for CTH4.Better start planning.

Ya'll post up those finds! Lovin' all the great pics and stories!! Scorpion Steve? .....Really? :-X :D You all just went wild in the desert, huh? I even heard a tale that there were monkeys in the trees there! :D

I was looking at the headstamps of the bullet casings I had found and thought this one was interesting. It might be my oldest find from the trip.

http://www.leverguns.com/articles/44wcf.htm If I'm reading this right, CF means center fire and this might be among the first cartidges of this type...

Winchester Model 1873 - Winchester’s first center fire cartridge
Winchester's catalog of that era describes their new cartridge as the " Winchester Model 1873" Caliber 44-100. In today’s language that designation simply means .44. A few years later the cartridge was described in Winchester catalogs as the .44 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire). It was also called the .44 Winchester.

From 1873 to 1885 the cartridges did not have an identifying head stamp. In 1886, the first cartridges appeared with the W.R.A. CO. .44 W.C.F. marking..

U.M.C.’s .44 C.F. / .44-40
Not long after Winchester introduced it‘s first central fire cartridge, U.M.C. (Union Metallic Cartridge Co.) located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, began offering their version of the same cartridge which they initially called the .44 C.F. and later changed to the .44-40. Some cartridge boxes were labeled .44 Winchester, giving credit to the firm who invented the cartridge. Because Marlin did not manufacture cartridges like Winchester did, it worked closely with U.M.C. and it’s rifles bore the .44-40 designation.

At least half of the casing is rotted away, but headstamp is legible.

That was a good find, beep. Some of the cartridges found had the double strike rim fire and those are from a 1876 Colt 44(gun was made only in 1876).

Sweet...I had heard about that. Dry Frio for this one.

Nice research Beep. That's really interesting. I was fortunate enough to locate one of the dual rim fire cartridges that WSD mentioned, and hadn't looked it up yet. Now I probably wont.

Gonna look for a 1876 Colt instead.

The .44 WCF isn't the same as the 44-100 I don't think . The .44-100 designation would mean it was a .44 caliber bullet behind 100 grains of black powder. The case would be huge in length to hold 100 grains of black powder. I think the .44 WCF is the same or very near the .44-40 which is still in production. I have heard of a .44-90 but I don't know if a .44-100 was ever commercially made. Correct me if I am wrong someone. Monty
