After six months of detecting and 44 trips to the beach, I finally found real gold. Turned out to be an 18k Cartier ring.

Update: It was a fake Cartier. And gold plated.

I really enjoyed wearing that supposedly gold Cartier ring for all of a day. I'm not a normal ring-wearer, but I was happy to wear and show off that one. I think the next time I find a ring with the Cartier logo all over it, I'm just going to stay in ignorance and believe I have the real thing as I wear it with pride.

Those fakes just kill me!
So far I've found 3 fake Cartier rings and 2 fake Cartier bracelets. They sure look good in the scoop!

Don't fret CH. You found a ring, it wasn't solid gold, but gold plated. But there's gold in "gold-plated", it's just not solid gold. So technically, you did find a "gold" ring. Bet that got your motivation up when you saw that in your scoop. It's just a little "taste" of what's to come for you, and proof that there are finds to be made as long as you keep going.

Hallmarks on fakes can look very official and still be fake !!

I find 18k quite often here in the states ? True 14k is more frequent, but there is a thriving 18k jewelry market here in the states. Cartier, vanclef, fabrege, and many others are exclusively 18k !! Not 14k.

It really depends on where you're hunting. There's communities, like from India and the Arabian Peninsula, that wear nothing less than 21k-24k. If you want to find this type of jewlery you need to hunt in areas where people like this visit. Obviously if you live in a place where the only jewlery stores sell 10k-14k that is typically all that you should expect to find. You have to take into account the level of wealth and the customs of your population, past and present, in order to accurately gauge an area's potential output. If everyone in your area carries name brand designer bags you can assume their jewelry is genuine, whereas if you observe everyone in an area is carrying bootleg fashion, you can rest assured their jewlery is costume. Why detect the place where the costume jewelry wearing people frequent when you can just as easily detect the place where the authentic jewelry toting people frequent, if you have the choice that is. Also remember, populations change over time, a rich place may become poor or vice versa - making old and new finds mingle across the ages.

Yup...totally agree....much of my hunting revolves around the Latin community in south Florida. Cuban, Columbian, Venezuelan, etc. These people are very proud of there gold culture and ware real gold for the main part. South Florida is a melting pot of cultures, and European tourists mix freely with the local Latin population and every type of person can be present at the vast beaches and swimming holes. My hunting strategy involves several important factors !! Confined small swimming areas that have high traffic. If there is a bar on the property even better. Clear water is a plus, and inviting conditions make people flock to certain locations more than others. Boating traffic, and anchoring spots at these spots are another factor i look for. Bottom conditions can be a factor also, with rock bottoms with light sand (dust over crust) are preferred for quick recoveries. Latin populations prefer certain spots over others, and i target spots with high Latino traffic. For every good jewelry find i will have 2-4 junk jewelry finds. Diving/snorkeling allows me to recover all the small golds that scoop users loose through the scoop holes. My biggest advantage is surveillance of the spots....keeping an eye on these locations allows me to watch crowds and see where they congregate in the water. When im not hunting, and e en when im in the water im people watching, and mentally noting the traffic patterns of waders, swimmers, and beach goers. Drinking creates horseplay, wrestling, and even fighting....I once found triple golds after a giant brawl at one of these drunken spots !! It is just crazy madness in the water here from April-October!! We have latins, Indians, Asians, spring breakers, summer vacationers, rich snow birds, etc. Anything is possible down here...it truly is an incredible mixing pot of cultures !!

It has specific numbers engraved inside the ring, which can be checked with the Cartier website. Mine matches an authentic 18k ring.

I would still test it to be sure, there are fake Cartier rings too.i have found couple rings with jewelery trademark and 14k stamped that turned out to be brass.

I have found fake Rollex watch that was also fake, but looked genuine.
