Virginia 1-PIECE Button!

This one was a BIG surprise. Josh and I were after the 4th H.M.A. today and I got the button signal.... I dig the plug and for some reason, this thing pinpointed WAY off. It was a good 4 inches or more to the left of where it seemed

. To clean it, I used 4 or 5 wetted cotton swabs and gently rubbed them over the surface to remove most of the dirt. Then I thinly layered my finger with mineral oil and brushed it over the surface, highlighting the highest points. I intentionally left some of the dirt to help bring out the detail.

UPDATE- The Button is the 1B listed in Bramblefind's reply (#7) below.. the only example I could find of the 1B online is listed in the link, item # cs112, over halfway down the page.. it's pretty beat up, but the same variant. :icon_thumleft:

RV means Rare Value

alright we're almost there now what does the 50 mean? is there some type of rating scale or only 50 known buttons?

I'm not sure exactly what it means creeper, hopefully someone can specify.. Either way, I appreciate the banner votes and compliments. Never would have thought it was the earliest of the VA buttons.

Amazing find Jeff and your 8 Artilleries isn't to shabby either Josh. WTG guys, you are tearing em' up.

The RV50 means "Relative Value" of the button. This was an estimated value that Albert put on the buttons in his book back in 1976. This was based on a button being in fine condition and the scarcity of the button. So with it being almost 35 yrs. since that book has been put out I would say that your excellent button there would have a relative value of a lot more. He does state that badly worn, damaged, or excavated specimens have less value, but we know that a scarce button like this would have high dollar written all over it in almost any condition! BTW, this info. is in Albert's book on page 8.
