Weekend with my father was a big "Bust"!! Bust Half that is!

I've been waiting to get back to my dads house to dig some dirt with my father. Its been a few months since we have had the opportunity to get out. Drove down on Friday and had a great spaghetti dinner and talked about the next day(Saturday). Woke up early and off we went to a Park that has given up over 40 Seated coins the last few years with high hopes. Not a single old coin found this day, not even a wheat. On the way home we hit a few schools and collected some clad and planned our next day. Headed to Bloomington for some clad hunting on Sunday and clad was collected along with a silver ring(I didn't post). Still just getting out with dad was special and to be honest, just something I've missed the last couple years. He is a beast with that Minelab and he has a Whites Classic that he uses for clad. But Saturday/Sunday the Detecting Gods were looking elsewhere. Went to my older sisters house Sunday night and she had an old house to hunt and already said her Minelab was ready to go. Monday morning we headed out and when I saw the house I thought it had promise. It sat close to where an old Trading Post used to be. We started finding clad right off, lots of clad, but I finally pulled a rough looking 1942 Merc and knew at least silver was present. Twenty minutes later had a hit, not deep at all in a gully at the edge of her property line. Thinking it was a clad quarter I took my digger and was poking until I hit the "quarter". I dug a small plug to pull this "quarter" out and saw something that I didn't think I'd ever find. I stand there looking at this 1830 Bust Half Dollar. It has bad corrosion on the back and a hole in it, but she is a beauty to me!!! My dad and sister thought I was crazy doing a double fisted pump while doing the chicken dance. I've found a couple Bust Dimes, but this had my heart beating I have to admit.

My totals for the weekend are:
1 Kennedy Half
1 Bust Half
49 clad quarters
62 clad dimes
1 Merc
21 clad nickels
1 Buffalo Nickel
172 memorial cents
1 Wheat cent
1 Indian Cent
1 Canadian Cent
2 foreign coins

313 coins with a total of $22.40

Beauty...nice half!

Re: Weekend with my father was a big "Bust"!!

Man, Jack, that's one heck of a find. A Bust Half...Woo Hoo!!!!

I think I would have died and gone to heaven if I found a coin like that. I guess it's time to make another trip across the country....a little further east next time.

Glad you also got the chance to hunt with your Pops. I bet he's pretty darn good with his Explorer too.

Major Congrats,

Excellent Jack, yes, I guess that was a big surprise finding that old Half. Overall a great variety of coin finds for the hunts.

Persistence pays off. Nice bust half!!! ;D I don't know what I'd do if i found one of those. I'm sure it would resemble a double fist pump while doing a chicken dance though. Awesome find :o :D!

Wow Jack!!! What an awesome read this thread is. I enjoyed hearing about your TH'ing adventures with your father. The bust half is simply amazing, wooowhooo!!
I notice it's holed but that just gives her some character. Maybe your could put a sterling loop on it and wear it on a chain. Great finds bud, congrats!! Nice clad count and dollar amount too.

:)

Hey Dan, you just don't see many found around here, mostly on the East coast. I expected a quarter and definitely not a Bust coin!! I'm still on cloud nine and keep checking it out and pinching myself to be certain its real!! My dad is super on his Minelab. He goes slow and has more Seated dimes in six years than I have in 24!! He definitely inspires me!!

Wow is right, Jack. That's one super find. Your sister had to be crying the blues knowing that coin was in her yard. Awesome man.

I almost lost my father this past February, he had quadruple bypass surgery and now he's swinging a Minelab around and has no give up in him, you have go tell him its time to go. He does know to stop and take breaks so he doesn't wear himself out!! I do enjoy our times together and need to make more trips down his way!!
